Since commencing production in January 2000, the mine has specialized in extracting premium low‑volatile, pulverised‑coke‑injection (LV PCI) coal for the global export market. In 2016, Middlemount South acquired a 70 % stake in the joint venture, joining POSCO Australia (20 %) and Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Australia (10 %) as co‑owners.
