About

The Government Legal Department (GLD) serves as the principal legal adviser to the UK government, delivering expert counsel on policy development, legislative drafting, and the implementation of government decisions. With a team of over 1,800 staff—including around 1,300 qualified solicitors and barristers—GLD provides comprehensive litigation support to most government departments and advises on employment, commercial, and European law, working closely with ministers, civil servants, and Parliamentary counsel. In addition, GLD’s Bona Vacantia Division administers the estates of individuals who die intestate and manages ownerless assets from dissolved companies across England and Wales, ensuring these assets are responsibly handled on behalf of the public.
