Kleinwasserkraft Österreich is the leading non-profit association representing the interests of the small hydropower sector in Austria, including operators, planners, and suppliers. With a membership of approximately 1,100, the organization advocates for and supports the continued development of small hydropower as a critical component of Austria’s renewable energy infrastructure. Currently, nearly 4,000 small hydropower plants contribute over 6 Terawatt-hours of carbon-free electricity to the Austrian grid, fulfilling more than 10% of the country’s electricity needs and powering approximately 1.7 million households. Kleinwasserkraft Österreich actively works to expand this contribution, aiming for an additional 3 Terawatt-hours of production by 2030 through supportive policy and industry collaboration.
