About
The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) is the German federal agency responsible for the management, maintenance, and development of Germany’s federal waterways – encompassing approximately 7,300 km of inland waterways and 23,000 km² of seaways. WSV ensures the smooth and efficient flow of vessel traffic through the operation of infrastructure like locks, weirs, and bridges, and provides guidance and support to shipping through its traffic and regional centers. As a significant employer with over 12,500 staff and a robust apprenticeship program, WSV offers diverse career opportunities in technical and non-technical fields. Beyond facilitating transportation, the organization is dedicated to ecological sustainability, implementing measures to preserve and improve waterway ecosystems, and proactively planning for the future of Germany’s waterways.
