Astemo Rock Spring, Inc. was established in 2000 and supplies aluminum knuckles to Honda and Subaru. We are in Rock Spring, GA, and operate on 3 shifts with 400 employees. We have three main manufacturing departments, Casting, Machining, and Press Assembly. We are part of Astemo, Inc. with 90,000 employees worldwide.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

As a Machining Engineer at Astemo Rock Spring, Inc., you will play a critical role in our Machining department. Reporting to the Machining Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for optimizing our machining processes to ensure efficient production and high-quality components. With your technical expertise and problem-solving skills, you will contribute to the development and implementation of innovative machining technologies and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Evaluate and optimize machining processes, including selecting appropriate cutting tools, feeds, speeds, and machining parameters to maximize efficiency and productivity.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement machining strategies, programs, and best practices.
  • Design and develop tooling, fixtures, and work holding solutions to enhance precision, reliability, and repeatability in machining operations.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and cost analysis for new machining projects and process improvements.
  • Utilize CAD/CAM software to create, modify, and optimize machining programs and tool paths.
  • Support new product development by providing machining input, feasibility analysis, and process documentation.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to evaluate, select, and implement new machining equipment and technologies.
  • Participate in process capability studies, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation for quality improvement.
  • Monitor machining operations, collect and analyze data, and introduce process improvements to enhance quality, reduce cycle times, and minimize waste.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, promoting a safe work environment within the Machining department.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in machining engineering.
  • Provide technical support and training to machining technicians, troubleshooting issues and offering guidance as needed.

Safety & Environmental:

  • Champion a strong safety culture, enforcing adherence to safety guidelines, procedures, and regulations always.
  • Support environmental initiatives and work towards minimizing the environmental impact of machining processes.

Quality:

  • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance teams to ensure that machining processes meet established quality standards.
  • Participate in statistical process control (SPC) activities and support root cause analysis for quality improvement.

Delivery:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth production flow and on-time delivery of machined components.
  • Analyze and optimize machining operations to support production targets and delivery schedules.

Productivity:

  • Develop and implement measures to increase efficiency, productivity, and throughput in machining operations.
  • Continuously monitor and identify opportunities for improvement in resource utilization.

Reporting:

  • Provide regular updates to the Machining Engineering Manager on work progress, key metrics, and process improvement initiatives within the Machining department.
  • Collaborate with the Machining Engineering Manager to gather and analyze data for reporting purposes, ensuring accuracy and relevance.

Preferred Skills:

  • Strong technical background in machining engineering, with expertise in machining processes, technologies, and best practices.
  • Proficiency in CNC programming, CAD/CAM software, and machining simulation tools.
  • Knowledge of cutting tools, tool materials, and their applications.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in using data analysis tools and software, as well as Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).

Minimum Experienced Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field, specializing in machining or manufacturing (advanced degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in machining engineering or a similar role within the manufacturing industry.
  • Strong knowledge of machining principles, practices, and technologies, with a track record of implementing successful process optimization initiatives.
  • Proficiency in CNC programming, CAD/CAM software, and machining simulation tools, utilizing advanced software and tools effectively.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Key Metrics Responsibility:

  • Monitor key performance metrics related to machining processes, including cycle times, scrap rates, production output, and resource utilization.
  • Analyze data and interpret trends to identify areas for improvement and drive performance optimization.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, including standing for extended periods, performing physically demanding tasks, and occasionally lifting heavy objects.
