This opportunity is part of The Hartford’s Personal Insurance Reserving team. The role is focused on reserving and trend analysis, primarily supporting The Hartford’s $1.25B Homeowners book, with additional exposure to Auto Liability and Physical Damage. Reserving insights directly influence the company’s financial results and play a critical role in how our business is priced and managed. The student will collaborate with cross-functional partners and present analyses to leaders across Reserving, Product, and Claims. Personal Insurance is a fast-paced and competitive environment with rich data and constant change, offering strong opportunities to develop analytical skills, synthesize insights, and drive meaningful business impact.

Opportunities:

  • Translate complex analyses into clear, data-driven insights for business partners and senior leaders

  • Build a strong foundation in core reserving techniques and understand their impact on financial results

  • Strengthen analytical skills to detect and measure emerging trends

  • Apply and enhance technical skills to streamline analyses and drive process improvements

  • Collaborate across Actuarial (BI Reserving, CW Pricing) and with Claims and Product partners

  • Develop business acumen, communication, and presentation skills

Major responsibilities:

  • Complete quarterly reserve reviews, including providing insight into key drivers of change

  • Develop and evaluate innovative reserving methods to inform and explain reserve selections

  • Partner with Claims Performance Analytics team on deep-dive analyses

  • Prepare Monthly Business Review (MBR) materials ultimately presented to senior leadership, including the CEO

  • Execute annual reviews of Schedule P, ULAE, and payment lags

Experience & Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

  • AD & Associate Actuary Role: 6-7 actuarial exams, 4+ years of experience, could be an Associate

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to effectively resolve complex issues.

  • Strong Excel skills required. Knowledge of SQL, VBA, R, Python, SAS or similar code languages a plus.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Attention to detail with strong time and project management skills.

  • Driven, intellectually curious, passionate, resourceful and creative.

  • Proactive individual, who challenges existing processes, can influence others and drive a process to a conclusion while meeting critical deadlines

Work Arrangement:

This role will be hybrid in our Hartford CT location. (Tuesday-Thursday) or remote.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$113,200 - $169,800
