AI Solutions Engineer: LLM, Prompt Engineering & Automation

Job Summary

Aptive Resources LLC is seeking an AI Solutions Engineer: LLM, Prompt Engineering & Automation to support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Electronic Health Record (EHR) program by enabling secure, compliant access to VA systems while advancing practical AI solution development, Python-enabled workflow automation, prompt engineering, and responsible implementation of generative AI capabilities across client delivery environments.

This role will focus on designing, prototyping, evaluating, and implementing AI and large language model solutions that improve delivery efficiency, automate workflows, accelerate analysis, strengthen knowledge management, and support mission-aligned decision-making. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with Python, LLMs, prompt engineering, AI-enabled workflow design, and practical automation. This individual will help translate emerging AI capabilities into usable tools, repeatable methods, reusable prompt patterns, and operational solutions for internal teams and client-facing delivery environments.

The candidate should be able to work effectively with client stakeholders, delivery teams, technical SMEs, platform owners, and program leadership to identify high-value use cases, build practical prototypes, evaluate AI outputs, support secure system access coordination, and promote responsible implementation within approved environments.

Primary Responsibilities

AI / LLM Solution Design & Delivery

  • Identify high-value AI/LLM use cases that improve workflow efficiency, document analysis, issue classification, knowledge retrieval, reporting, decision support, and operational delivery.
  • Translate business and delivery challenges into practical AI solution concepts, prototypes, implementation recommendations, and reusable operating approaches.
  • Develop proof-of-concept solutions using LLMs, Python, APIs, structured prompts, retrieval workflows, automation scripts, and human-in-the-loop review methods.
  • Develop and refine prompt engineering patterns for summarization, extraction, classification, comparison, rewriting, analysis, decision support, and knowledge retrieval.
  • Evaluate AI tools, LLM platforms, and supporting technologies for usability, limitations, integration complexity, governance considerations, scalability, and production readiness.
  • Assess AI outputs for accuracy, consistency, traceability, hallucination risk, data sensitivity, bias concerns, and operational failure modes.
  • Support AI solution briefs, feasibility assessments, whitepapers, technical recommendations, and capture/RFI/RFP solutioning as needed.
  • Partner with delivery teams to move AI ideas from concept to prototype, pilot, or repeatable delivery model.

Python Automation & Technical Prototyping

  • Develop Python scripts, notebooks, utilities, and lightweight applications to automate manual tasks, streamline data processing, and support AI-enabled workflows.
  • Use Python to support data extraction, transformation, validation, summarization, classification, analysis, reporting, and workflow automation.
  • Build integrations with APIs, LLM services, knowledge repositories, document stores, collaboration platforms, and analytics environments.
  • Prototype tools that help teams analyze documents, summarize complex information, generate structured outputs, classify issues, and search knowledge bases.
  • Create reusable technical assets such as Python templates, API wrappers, prompt libraries, prompt testing utilities, evaluation scripts, validation checklists, and implementation guides.
  • Support AI agent or workflow design where appropriate, including task decomposition, tool use, workflow orchestration, escalation rules, and human review checkpoints.
  • Document prototypes clearly enough for handoff, repeatable use, testing, and future enhancement.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Engineering, Information Systems, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of relevant professional experience in technology, data, AI/LLM solutioning, automation, analytics, software development, or related consulting/delivery environments.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience using Python, automation, APIs, data workflows, AI/LLM tools, prompt engineering, or technical prototyping to solve business or operational problems.
  • Hands-on experience with Python for automation, scripting, data processing, API integration, analysis, or technical prototyping.
  • Experience using Python libraries or tools commonly applied to data, automation, or AI workflows, such as pandas, NumPy, requests, Jupyter, FastAPI, Flask, Streamlit, LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with LLMs, generative AI tools, prompt engineering, AI-enabled workflow design, or applied AI solution development.
  • Experience developing structured prompts, prompt templates, prompt libraries, evaluation rubrics, or repeatable prompt engineering methods.
  • Ability to design and evaluate AI use cases for feasibility, value, risk, implementation complexity, usability, and operational readiness.
  • Experience working with structured and unstructured data, including documents, spreadsheets, reports, tickets, requirements, meeting notes, or knowledge repositories.
  • Ability to develop AI-enabled prototypes, automation scripts, workflow concepts, or technical demonstrations that solve practical business problems.
  • Strong technical writing skills, including experience producing technical briefs, feasibility assessments, concept papers, implementation guidance, user guides, or executive-ready recommendations.
  • Ability to coordinate across technical teams, business stakeholders, platform owners, program leaders, and client stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to operate independently in ambiguous environments.
  • Strong communication, documentation, collaboration, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to translate complex technical capabilities into practical operational value for non-technical stakeholders.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with LLM application patterns such as retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, vector search, semantic search, AI agents, tool calling, human-in-the-loop workflows, or automated document analysis.
  • Experience developing reusable AI assets such as prompt libraries, automation templates, evaluation rubrics, use-case intake templates, implementation playbooks, or responsible AI guidance.
  • Experience with LLM evaluation methods, including prompt testing, hallucination analysis, adversarial testing, red teaming, bias review, output scoring, or quality assurance rubrics.
  • Familiarity with secure system access coordination, including role/permission tracking, platform onboarding, access dependencies, compliance prerequisites, and approved-environment workflows.
  • Familiarity with platforms or tools such as Azure OpenAI, OpenAI APIs, Databricks, GitHub, Power BI, ServiceNow, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Teams, Jupyter, Streamlit, or similar tools.
  • Experience supporting bid, capture, RFI, RFP, solutioning, technical feasibility reviews, AI strategy, or AI governance efforts.
  • Experience working in VA, VHA, federal health, federal technology, EHR, EHRM, OIT, Digital Health Office, or similar government delivery environments.
