What’s the role?
You’ll join Westpac’s Group Fraud Management Platform Change team, the technology that helps detect and prevent fraud and scams. This is a hands‑on, application development engineering role where the work you do directly helps protect customers and strengthen trust.
This is a Sydney based role on Warrane, Gadigal Country, offered as a full time, permanent position with a hybrid way of working.
We’re looking for an Application Engineer who thrives in complex enterprise environment, understands system landscapes, how different systems interact end‑to‑end, and how changes propagate across integrations and downstream platforms. A core expectation is the ability to logically reason through problems and debug issues across distributed systems.
What do I need?
- Strong technical foundation in application development in complex enterprise environments, with the ability to design, build and integrate application as part of projects
- Experience in Java and Spring Boot, including developing and supporting APIs, with a solid understanding of application and integration architecture
- Experience with integration and event‑driven technologies, including Kafka and/or MQ, and an understanding of how distributed systems interact end‑to‑end
- Experience with DevOps and CI/CD practices and tooling, including GitHub, GitHub Actions, Bitbucket, Jenkins, with automated builds, deployments, and release pipelines
- Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills to resolve complex integration and application issues
- Hands‑on experience with Linux/Unix shell script, Oracle databases (SQL and PL/SQL), and enterprise runtime and scheduling tools such as Tomcat and Control‑M
- Exposure to infrastructure, networks, and modern technology platforms.
- Clear and effective communication skills, with experience across both packaged and custom‑built solutions.
Desirable Skills
- Exposure to fraud, scams, or banking platforms is advantageous but not essential
- Experience using AI‑assisted coding tools to improve development efficiency and code consistency
- Experience working in Agile delivery environments, using tools such as JIRA and Confluence
- Exposure to testing frameworks and test automation
