The Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) organization is responsible for managing relationships with millions of Merchants and Partners around the world that facilitate American Express acceptance and enabling the day-to-day operations of our company’s payment network. The people, processes, and technology that support this vital function are evolving to improve the merchant experience and economics. Within GMNS, the Global Strategy, Operations & Performance (GSOP) team’s mission is to deliver a best-in-class premium merchant member experience that will get merchant to not only accept American Express but openly welcome and recommend us to their customers.

The GMNS Data Office is responsible for bringing GMNS critical data elements and applications under the Enterprise Data Management Operating Policy (AEMP70) and Enterprise Data Risk Management Policy (AEMP79) compliance. Our team is dedicated to helping American Express leverage the true value of data through application of Data Management and Governance principles.

Role Description:

As an Apprentice – Data Governance, you will support the GMNS Data Office in executing key data management and governance activities, while gaining exposure to how data is managed and utilized across the organization.

This role is suited for a detail-oriented, curious, and self-driven individual who can work with data, understand business context, and contribute through structured thinking. You will support the team in working with data, synthesizing information, and contributing to reporting and governance processes, while also creating clear, structured outputs such as presentations and documentation for stakeholders.

You will gain hands-on exposure to enterprise data governance (including policies such as AEMP70 and AEMP79), and contribute to initiatives related to data quality, reporting, and governance processes. The role also emphasizes leveraging AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) to enhance research, content creation, and overall productivity.

  • Support execution of data governance and data management activities, including documentation of data elements and governance artifacts
  • Contribute to data quality tracking, reporting, and basic analysis to identify trends or gaps
  • Support data incident tracking, documentation, and follow-ups
  • Prepare reports, dashboards, and summaries for ongoing initiatives
  • Develop presentations and structured communication materials for stakeholders
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accuracy and timely delivery of outputs

Apprenticeship Duration - 1 year

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate in Business, Analytics, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field (0–1 year of experience preferred)
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to data governance, data management, or data analysis concepts
  • Experience using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) for practical applications such as research, content creation, or workflow efficiency
  • Familiarity with structured problem-solving, reporting, or working with data-driven outputs
