Assistant Deli Manager

Position Summary

The Assistant Deli Manager supports the Deli Manager in overseeing daily department operations, ensuring high-quality food production, merchandising, and customer service. This role helps lead the deli team, maintain food safety standards, control shrink, and deliver a clean, organized, and inviting department that drives sales and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

Department Operations

  • Assist in managing day-to-day deli operations, including food preparation, stocking, and service
  • Ensure cases and hot bars are fully stocked, fresh, and visually appealing
  • Support ordering, inventory levels, and production planning to meet demand
  • Maintain organized backroom, prep, and service areas

Team Leadership & Support

  • Help supervise, train, and coach deli associates
  • Assign tasks and monitor workflow to ensure efficient execution
  • Reinforce customer service, food safety, and productivity standards
  • Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment

Food Production & Quality Control

  • Oversee preparation of deli items including hot foods, fried products, and ready-to-eat meals
  • Ensure proper food handling, rotation, labeling, and temperature control
  • Maintain consistent product quality and presentation standards
  • Remove outdated or substandard items promptly

Merchandising & Sales Execution

  • Execute promotional programs, meal deals, and seasonal offerings
  • Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and product placement
  • Identify opportunities to increase sales through sampling and cross-merchandising
  • Monitor sales trends and adjust production levels accordingly

Inventory & Shrink Control

  • Assist in managing inventory to reduce waste and out-of-stocks
  • Ensure proper receiving, storage, and handling of fresh and prepared foods
  • Support inventory counts and maintain accurate records
  • Control shrink through effective rotation and production planning

Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain strict adherence to food safety and sanitation standards
  • Ensure compliance with health department regulations and company policies
  • Enforce proper use of kitchen equipment and personal protective gear
  • Address and report safety hazards immediately
Qualifications
  • Previous deli, food service, or grocery experience preferred
  • Leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and preparation standards
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in hot and cold environments
