The Assistant Director, Social Media serves as the day-to-day manager and content lead for the Division of University Advancement’s social media presence, with a strong focus on Miami University’s alumni-facing accounts. This role is responsible for creating engaging, platform-optimized content, actively managing online communities, and staying ahead of emerging social media trends to enhance alumni engagement and connection.Job Description
As part of the Multi-Channel Creative team, the assistant director will report directly to the Associate Director, Multi-Channel Creative, and collaborate closely with designers, writers, and marketing strategists to develop compelling storytelling that highlights alumni experiences, promotes key initiatives, and strengthens the Miami alumni community.
This is a full-time, fixed-term position supported by limited-term funding currently available through June 30, 2030. Continuation beyond that date will depend on available funding and business need.

Essential Duties
Social Media Account Management & Community Engagement
- Manage day-to-day operations of Miami University Advancement and alumni social media accounts, including scheduling, publishing, and real-time engagement
- Actively monitor and respond to messages, comments, and mentions to foster a positive and engaging online alumni community
- Build and nurture relationships with alumni through thoughtful, timely interactions and community management best practices
Content Creation & Storytelling
- Create engaging, platform-specific content that highlights alumni stories, achievements, and experiences
- Develop and execute content for alumni events, holidays, campaigns, and key university moments
- Capture and/or edit photo and video content; collaborate with designers to produce visually compelling assets
- Stay on top of social media trends, use of digital tools and AI, and proactively incorporate relevant formats, themes, and storytelling approaches
- Identify and elevate authentic alumni voices to strengthen connection and affinity
Strategy & Trend Awareness
- Monitor social media trends, platform updates, and audience behaviors to inform content strategy
- Monitor and analyze social media performance, translating engagement, reach, and audience insights into monthly reporting and actionable recommendations that inform content strategy and optimize campaign effectiveness
- Bring forward new ideas and opportunities to keep Miami’s alumni channels fresh, relevant, and engaging
Campaign Collaboration
- Incorporate key initiatives of the THRIVE Strategic Plan into work and report metrics to THRIVE Committee on Strengthening Alumni Engagement.
- Support and execute social media components of integrated campaigns with a focus on alumni engagement
- Partner with internal teams to align messaging and amplify key initiatives through social storytelling
- When applicable, attend and/or work alumni events that may be hosted after hours
Cross-Campus Collaboration
- Serve as an active participant in the Miami University social media community of practice
- Share insights, trends, and opportunities while ensuring alignment with university-wide standards and best practices
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and proven experience managing social media channels in a professional setting
- Demonstrated experience using analytics tools to monitor performance and translate data into actionable recommendations
- Experience creating or editing photo and video content for social media
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong writing and editing skills with a clear understanding of platform-specific best practices
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a collaborative environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in presenting performance results
- Experience working within established brand standards
- Experience in higher education, nonprofit, or mission-driven communications
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
