Assistant Planning Director

The Town of Hilton Head Island is seeking a collaborative and experienced planning professional to serve as its next Assistant Planning Director. This is a unique opportunity to help lead the planning and development efforts of one of the most iconic and environmentally conscious coastal communities in the Southeast.<\/span>

Reporting to the Planning Director, the Assistant Planning Director plays a vital leadership role in managing the operations of the Planning Department. This includes oversight of community planning, development services, permitting, inspections, economic development, natural resource protection, and workforce housing. The position also supports the implementation of the Town\u2019s Comprehensive Plan, Land Management Ordinance, and building codes. <\/span>

Key Responsibilities:<\/span>
<\/span><\/span><\/p>

• Assist in setting strategic direction and operational goals for the Planning Department.<\/span>
  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
• Supervise and support division managers and staff across planning, zoning, and development services.<\/span>
  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
• Coordinate regional planning efforts and represent the Town on various boards and committees.<\/span>
  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
• Support economic development and redevelopment initiatives.<\/span>
  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
• Evaluate and recommend updates to codes, ordinances, and planning policies.<\/span>
  <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
• Serve as Acting Planning Director in their absence.<\/span><\/span><\/span>
  <\/span><\/span><\/li><\/ul>

  Ideal Candidate Profile:<\/span>
  <\/span><\/span><\/p>

  • Bachelor\u2019s degree and at least eight years of progressively responsible experience, including senior management roles.<\/span>
    <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
  • Strong knowledge of planning, zoning, building codes, GIS, and municipal operations.<\/span>
    <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
  • Proven leadership, project management, and public communication skills.<\/span>
    <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>
  • Ability to manage complex projects and foster cross\-departmental collaboration.<\/span>
