Assistant Produce Manager
Position Summary
The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in overseeing daily department operations, ensuring high-quality product presentation, freshness, and availability. This role assists in leading the produce team, driving sales, controlling shrink, and maintaining a clean, organized, and food-safe department that delivers an exceptional shopping experience.
Key ResponsibilitiesDepartment Operations
- Assist in managing day-to-day produce department functions
- Ensure product is properly stocked, rotated, and displayed to maximize freshness and appeal
- Maintain full, fresh, and visually appealing displays aligned with merchandising standards
- Support ordering and inventory management to meet sales demand while minimizing shrink
Team Leadership & Support
- Help supervise, train, and develop produce associates
- Provide direction and task prioritization during shifts
- Reinforce productivity standards and hold team accountable for execution
- Promote a positive, team-focused work environment
Merchandising & Sales Execution
- Execute ad items, seasonal programs, and promotional displays
- Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and item location
- Identify opportunities to increase sales through cross-merchandising and display impact
- Maintain awareness of sales trends and adjust displays accordingly
Quality & Freshness Control
- Monitor product quality, ensuring only fresh, market-ready items are available for sale
- Enforce proper rotation practices and date checks
- Remove damaged, spoiled, or outdated product promptly
Shrink & Inventory Management
- Assist in controlling shrink through proper handling, rotation, and ordering practices
- Support inventory counts and ensure backroom organization
- Minimize waste through effective forecasting and execution
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain strict adherence to food safety and sanitation standards
- Ensure department cleanliness, including prep areas, wet racks, and storage
- Follow all safety procedures, including proper equipment use and lifting practices
- Address and report safety hazards immediately
- Prior produce or grocery experience preferred
- Leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of produce handling, rotation, and quality standards
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in wet/cold conditions
