Assistant Produce Manager

Position Summary

The Assistant Produce Manager supports the Produce Manager in overseeing daily department operations, ensuring high-quality product presentation, freshness, and availability. This role assists in leading the produce team, driving sales, controlling shrink, and maintaining a clean, organized, and food-safe department that delivers an exceptional shopping experience.

Key Responsibilities

Department Operations

  • Assist in managing day-to-day produce department functions
  • Ensure product is properly stocked, rotated, and displayed to maximize freshness and appeal
  • Maintain full, fresh, and visually appealing displays aligned with merchandising standards
  • Support ordering and inventory management to meet sales demand while minimizing shrink

Team Leadership & Support

  • Help supervise, train, and develop produce associates
  • Provide direction and task prioritization during shifts
  • Reinforce productivity standards and hold team accountable for execution
  • Promote a positive, team-focused work environment

Merchandising & Sales Execution

  • Execute ad items, seasonal programs, and promotional displays
  • Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and item location
  • Identify opportunities to increase sales through cross-merchandising and display impact
  • Maintain awareness of sales trends and adjust displays accordingly

Quality & Freshness Control

  • Monitor product quality, ensuring only fresh, market-ready items are available for sale
  • Enforce proper rotation practices and date checks
  • Remove damaged, spoiled, or outdated product promptly

Shrink & Inventory Management

  • Assist in controlling shrink through proper handling, rotation, and ordering practices
  • Support inventory counts and ensure backroom organization
  • Minimize waste through effective forecasting and execution

Safety & Compliance

  • Maintain strict adherence to food safety and sanitation standards
  • Ensure department cleanliness, including prep areas, wet racks, and storage
  • Follow all safety procedures, including proper equipment use and lifting practices
  • Address and report safety hazards immediately
Qualifications
  • Prior produce or grocery experience preferred
  • Leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of produce handling, rotation, and quality standards
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in wet/cold conditions
