An Assistant Water Systems Superintendent job is available with the City of Fort Worth Water Department, Plant Operations Division. The Assistant Water Systems Superintendent will need to demonstrate collaborative management and leadership skills in planning, directing, managing and coordinating the operational and maintenance activities of 6 plants, collections, distribution, HVAC, and wholesale metering.
This position, assisting the Water Systems Superintendent, directs the day-to-day maintenance activities of all of the facilities and collaborates with other divisions, departments, consultants and outside contractors to ensure that plant operations is maintained efficiently, in compliance with all applicable regulations, and within established budget. The position provides technical advice and complex administrative support for the Assistant Water Director and ensures that modern, safe, effective, and efficient practices are utilized by personnel, as well as establishing accountability measures consistent with Department and Citywide goals and initiatives. Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering, chemistry, biology or related field.
- Five (5) years of increasing responsible experience in either water or wastewater treatment operations and maintenance, including two (2) years of supervisory responsibility
- Valid Texas driver’s license
- TCEQ Class C Wastewater/Surface Water Treatment Operator License will be preferred at time of application. Applicants licensed outside the State of Texas will be required to obtain the appropriate license as outlined above through reciprocity, within six months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in water/wastewater collections, treatment operations and maintenance, including three (3) years of supervisory responsibility
The Assistant Water Systems Superintendent job responsibilities include:
- Supervises staff, which includes prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and, making hiring, termination, and disciplinary decisions or recommendations
- Assists in managing assigned services and activities of one or more water/wastewater plants. Plans and implements work programs; and coordinates with other divisions, departments, and City personnel to ensure the effective operations of assigned plants
- Manages and participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities for assigned water/wastewater operations and programs; and recommends and administers policies and procedures
- Reviews engineering principles to determine the needed labor, equipment, and material to accomplish the installation and to determine effective ways for repair or construction
- Research new industry processes and equipment for potential implementation. Collaborates with others to research trends, data, and other records to gain knowledge of equipment and machinery; and inspects and investigates problem areas within the system for possible remedies
- Participates in the development and administration of the division's annual budget. Participates in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; oversees outside contracts; monitors expenditures; oversees inventory; and makes purchasing decisions
- Provides technical staff assistance to the assigned senior management personnel. Reviews and submits reports regarding assigned repair and maintenance projects
- Research new innovative technology and implement new maintenance practices

Working Conditions and Physical Demand

Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases and workspace restrictions.
Light Work – Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for the Sedentary Work category and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated Light Work.
