The Mindset We Bring

ASU Local is an evolving model. The Coach thrives in ambiguity, approaches every challenge as a learning opportunity, and consistently demonstrates:

  • Navigate Change with Proactiveness: Anticipate student needs and institutional shifts with proactiveness

  • Spirit of Learning by Doing: Pilot new approaches, reflect on what works, iterate quickly

  • Evolve for Students Mindset: Every process, every session, every conversation is in service of student success. If it doesn't serve students, we change it.

  • Data-Informed Humility: Use data to challenge assumptions, celebrate progress, and redirect effort.

Driving Outcomes — Our North Stars

Every decision, every outreach, every session is anchored to two non-negotiable outcomes monitored daily:

  • 90%+ Term-to-Term Persistence

  • 90%+ Students in Good Academic Standing (Cumulative GPA ≥ 2.0)

The Coach monitors student data daily — tracking GPA trends, course progress, attendance signals, and early alerts — to ensure the cohort moves consistently toward these targets. These metrics are not lagging indicators; they are live instruments that shape every coaching action.

Who We're Developing: The ASU Local Graduate Profile

Graduating from ASU Local means more than earning a degree. The Coach actively develops the following capacities in every student — through programming, coaching conversations, and community experiences — grounded in NACE career readiness competencies:

Career-Ready Applies self-knowledge, academic knowledge, and real-world experience effectively to meet workplace expectations and demonstrate readiness for professional success. The Coach connects students to internships, networking opportunities, and career exploration throughout their time in the program.

Collaborative & Inclusive Values multiple perspectives and fosters inclusive environments to achieve shared goals. The Coach intentionally builds a cohort community where students practice collaboration, empathy, and inclusion as everyday skills — not just classroom concepts.

Problem Solver & Critical Thinker Analyzes complex information, evaluates alternatives, and implements reasoned solutions in uncertain or challenging situations. Life Lab and Academic Lab sessions are designed to surface and strengthen these skills through real-world scenarios and reflective dialogue.

Lifelong Learner Takes ownership of ongoing learning, adapting knowledge to evolving personal, academic, and professional contexts. The Coach models this disposition daily and supports students in developing the self-awareness and agency to keep growing beyond graduation.

Ethically Grounded Leader Leads with integrity, demonstrates principled decision-making, and incorporates ethical considerations and social responsibility into actions. The Coach creates space for students to grapple with complex questions, develop their values, and practice leadership in their communities.

Essential Duties:

1. Daily Data Monitoring & Tiered Outreach

  • Review student academic dashboards, early alert systems, and LMS data every day to identify shifts in persistence or GPA standing.

  • Categorize each student into the appropriate TSS tier and adjust outreach intensity accordingly.

  • Initiate proactive, relationship-based contact with Tier 2 and Tier 3 students — via text, call, or in-person — before challenges escalate.

  • Document all coaching contacts, interventions, and follow-ups in the student information system.

2. Facilitate Weekly Programming — Life Lab & Academic Lab

  • Lead block-scheduled, in-person weekly sessions anchored in two core formats:

    • Life Lab: Experiential workshops covering wellbeing, social connectivity, changemaking, and purpose-driven career exploration. Sessions are discussion-based, activity-driven, and community-building — directly developing the Graduate Profile competencies of collaboration, critical thinking, and ethical leadership.

    • Academic Lab: Skill-building sessions focused on mastering learning strategies, navigating ASU's online academic platform, degree planning, and academic recovery — building the habits of a lifelong learner and career-ready professional.

  • Design and document lesson plans each week aligned to ASU Local's student development outcomes and Graduate Profile competencies.

  • Continuously adapt session content and format based on student feedback, cohort needs, and collaboration with the broader ASU Local team.

3. One-on-One Coaching & Relationship Building

  • Conduct regular 1:1 check-ins calibrated to each student's TSS tier — from light-touch for Tier 1 to frequent, intensive sessions for Tier 3.

  • Build authentic, trust-based relationships with every student, making them feel known, valued, and supported throughout their academic journey.

  • Use coaching conversations to help students develop self-knowledge, articulate their values, and connect their academic experience to their career and life goals — core to the Graduate Profile.

  • Guide each student in identifying academic pathways, extracurricular opportunities, research, internships, and study abroad options.

  • Provide support on select evenings and weekends as needed to meet students where they are.

  • Drive toward a 90%+ year-over-year retention rate and a 75%+ four-year graduation rate.

4. Wraparound Support & Resource Navigation

  • Identify students requiring additional ASU services — tutoring, mental health support, financial emergency assistance, disability services, and more.

  • Make warm referrals to appropriate providers and proactively follow up with Tier 2/3 students to confirm they are accessing help.

  • Serve as the bridge between the student and the broader ASU support ecosystem.

5. Recruitment & Program Growth

  • Lead outreach and enrollment efforts to grow the student cohort to an optimal scale.

  • Guide prospective students from inquiry through enrollment, serving as a trusted first point of contact for the community.

  • Represent ASU Local at recruitment events, campus tours, and community presentations.

6. Events, Community, & Career Networking

  • Design and execute signature social events that build cohort identity and give students a sense of belonging throughout their journey.

  • Partner with local professionals, civic organizations, and employers to create experiences that place students in real-world contexts where they practice collaboration, problem-solving, and professional presence.

  • Leverage a growing local network to turn events into on-ramps for internships, mentorships, and career pathways.
