Bilingual Underwriter

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Bilingual Underwriter based in Canada.

You will join a well-established insurance environment where technical underwriting expertise directly contributes to fair, accurate, and accessible risk assessment across life and disability insurance products. In this role, you will operate remotely while handling complex underwriting files with a high level of autonomy and responsibility. You will evaluate risk, apply structured underwriting methodologies, and ensure decisions align with internal guidelines and regulatory standards. The position involves direct interaction with applicants, partners, and reinsurers, requiring both technical precision and strong communication skills. This is a key role for an experienced underwriter looking to contribute to meaningful, high-impact insurance decisions across Canada.

Accountabilities:

  • Perform detailed risk assessment using individual underwriting methods for life and disability insurance applications
  • Independently manage complex underwriting files while respecting established approval limits and internal guidelines
  • Evaluate and apply approval thresholds, including up to $750,000 in life insurance and $2,500 in disability insurance coverage
  • Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and professionally with applicants, brokers, and stakeholders
  • Negotiate and collaborate with reinsurers to identify solutions that support favourable case outcomes
  • Work closely with partners, TPAs, and internal teams to ensure consistent and accurate risk evaluation
  • Act as a subject matter resource during contestability periods and complex case reviews
  • Ensure compliance with Canadian insurance laws, contracts, and underwriting standards
  • Contribute to process improvements and maintain high-quality underwriting practices across all cases
  • Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, health sciences, or a related field
    • 5+ years of experience in life or disability underwriting
    • Strong knowledge of Canadian insurance contracts, regulations, and underwriting practices
    • Progress toward or completion of FLMI and/or FALU designation is considered an asset
    • Excellent analytical, judgment, and problem-solving abilities in complex risk scenarios
    • Strong autonomy with the ability to manage responsibilities independently
    • Excellent communication skills in both French and English (bilingual proficiency required)
    • Collaborative mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and knowledge sharing
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with precision under defined guidelines
    • Comfortable working in a remote, fast-paced professional environment
    • Benefits:

      • Annual salary between $110,000 and $120,000 CAD depending on experience
