Experienced Care Home Cook – Part-Time Day Shifts


Location: Downs House Care Home, Petersfield, Hampshire
Pay: £14.00 per hour weekdays | £14.50 per hour weekends
Hours: 16 hours per week – Permanent Contract
Shift Pattern: Day shifts only, 7:00am–3:00pm | Alternate weekends

  • Week 1: Saturday & Sunday (7:00am – 3:00pm)
  • Week 2: Thursday & Friday (7:00am – 3:00pm)

Downs House Care Home in Petersfield is a welcoming 46-bed residential care home, providing high-quality, person-centred care in a warm and supportive environment.


We are looking for a confident and experienced Cook to join our friendly kitchen team, preparing fresh, home-style meals for our residents.


This is a rewarding opportunity for an experienced cook who takes pride in their work and wants to make a real difference every day. Your cooking will directly support residents’ comfort, wellbeing and enjoyment, helping to create a true sense of home through food.


About the Role

You will be responsible for preparing nutritious, high-quality meals while supporting residents’ individual dietary needs and preferences.


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and serving fresh, home-cooked meals
  • Cooking breakfasts, lunches and light evening meals
  • Baking cakes and preparing desserts
  • Supporting dietary requirements and modified diets
  • Maintaining excellent food hygiene and kitchen standards
  • Keeping the kitchen clean, safe and organised
  • Working independently during kitchen shifts
  • Creating a positive and enjoyable mealtime experience for residents


Essential Experience & Requirements

We are looking for an experienced Cook who has:

✔ Previous professional cooking experience
✔ Experience preparing fresh meals independently
✔ Strong knowledge of food hygiene and safety standards
✔ Understanding of dietary requirements and modified diets
✔ Confidence working independently and managing kitchen responsibilities
✔ Good organisation and time management skills
✔ A caring and positive approach to food and resident wellbeing


Experience working in a care home, healthcare, school, café, pub or similar catering environment would be desirable.


Most importantly, we are looking for someone who takes pride in their cooking and understands the important role food plays in residents’ daily lives.
