CFD Engineer, Senior Principal

The CFD Senior Principal Engineer will normally plan, conduct, and supervise engineering assignments involving larger, more critical projects or multiple projects. These projects, by nature of their complexity and difficulty, require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering energy industry. Project work and assignments may be broad in nature, requiring ingenuity and cross-functional coordination. Provides technical assistance within a given area of specialization in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Process Safety to help deliver high-impact technical projects across Brazil and global markets. Our Risk Management team in Brazil supports clients in improving the safety, reliability, and resilience of their assets and operations. We work across CAPEX and OPEX projects, supporting customers in upstream, midstream, downstream, and emerging sectors such as BESS, CCS, and hydrogen.

What You Will Do:

  • Assists in the development of senior-level-range business plans and related annual operating and capital expense budgets
  • Will lead or support a variety of technical safety and risk studies, including:
  • Fire and explosion modelling
  • Gas detector allocation
  • Flame detector allocation
  • Exhaust and ventilation dispersion
  • Smoke and gas dispersion
  • Flare radiation analysis
  • Helideck turbulence studies
  • Process safety and risk studies such as HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, Bow-Tie, Safety Case, and EERA
  • Maintains an active awareness of technical, business, and management developments affecting the present and potential customers and communicates this information promptly to the appropriate senior-level managers.
  • Maintains awareness of product/service development needs of ABS and advises the appropriate senior-level managers of market opportunities and technical needs related to specific structures.
  • Initiates and maintains extensive contacts with key engineers and officials of other organizations and companies, requiring skill in persuasion and negotiation of critical issues.
  • Recommends facilities, personnel, and funds required to carry out programs that are directly related to and directed toward fulfilling overall company objectives.
  • Serves as Account Manager to designated and potential customers and actively promotes the services and capabilities of ABS throughout the business community.
  • Ensures the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of all projects within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Develops suggested Rule changes and/or Rule development projects as assigned. Interprets and advises staff in matters related to the application of Rules and Regulations within the project groups.
  • Represents the company at conferences and other meetings to resolve important problems and to plan and coordinate work between technology areas.
  • Develops working practices and procedures for new areas of technology. Works closely with a senior level Manager with regards to day-to-day activities, as appropriate, such as status/scheduling of work, setting priorities, sales initiatives, etc.

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • B.S. degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Graduate from University and a minimum of 15 years of related industry experience.
  • M.Sc. or postgraduate qualification in Safety Engineering, Process Safety, or related field
  • Experience in international business and technical processes, as well as international requirements and problem resolution, is necessary.
  • International experience or knowledge of international business and related technical processes, requirements, and problem-solving skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong experience in advanced CFD modelling applied to risk and safety
  • Experience in analyses related to fire, explosion, dispersion, and detection studies
  • Fluent Portuguese and English
  • Strong report writing, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and deliver high-quality technical work in a consulting environment

  • Experience in QRA, vulnerability analysis, PHAST, and/or SAFETI
  • Knowledge of Human Factors, including:
    • Human Reliability Analysis (HRA)
    • Human Factors Engineering (HFE)
  • Familiarity with Petro-HRA
  • Familiarity with Brazilian regulations and industry requirements, including Petrobras guidelines, ANP requirements, and applicable NRs
  • Experience across upstream, downstream, and midstream
  • Knowledge of Python, VBA, or other programming/automation tools
  • Interest in digitalization and technical innovation
  • Spanish language skills is a plus.

Reporting Relationships:

The incumbent reports directly to a Managing Principal Engineer or higher. Direct reports to the incumbent will be members of the engineering or technical staff and office support staff.
