Key Role
Experience as a Civil Engineer with specialisation or strong project experience in pavement engineering, pavement design, materials engineering, and roads infrastructure is required for this role based in Cape Town within the Transport & Infrastructure business. The incumbent will utilise their qualifications and pavement engineering experience to work within a team of professional engineers and technologists delivering roads, highways, and pavements projects, including investigations, design, construction support, technical reviews, and client-facing project delivery.
Carry out pavement investigations, condition assessments, surveys, pavement design, engineering calculations, technical reporting, working drawings, and cost estimates
Undertake pavement engineering tasks as part of project design development for roads, highways, municipal roads, and related transport infrastructure projects
Apply pavement and materials engineering knowledge to pavement rehabilitation, surfacing selection, pavement layer design, and construction methodology reviews
Review technical submissions, design reports, drawings, specifications, materials information, and contractor documentation for compliance with project requirements
Perform construction supervision and delegated construction contract administration duties on civil and pavement works where required
Provide technical input on SANRAL, provincial, municipal, and private sector roads and pavement projects, including materials, specifications, quality, and performance requirements
Liaise with clients, contractors, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to support effective project delivery and technical decision-making
Assist with preparation of proposals, tenders, project budgets, resource estimates, and technical inputs for new project opportunities
Support the growth and development of the pavement engineering capability by sharing technical knowledge and mentoring junior team members where required

- BEng or BSc degree in Civil Engineering
- Professional registration with ECSA as a Pr Eng
- 5+ years’ experience in civil engineering with strong exposure to pavements, roads, highways, materials engineering, or pavement rehabilitation projects
- Experience working on large roads infrastructure projects, preferably including SANRAL, provincial, municipal, or transport infrastructure projects
- Experience in pavement design, pavement analysis, materials investigations, construction monitoring, and technical reporting
- Knowledge of relevant South African roads specifications and pavement design practices, including COTO/COLTO, SANRAL, and applicable client requirements
- Working knowledge of relevant engineering software and tools such as Civil 3D, AutoCAD, pavement design or analysis tools, Microsoft Project, Word, and Excel will be advantageous
Key Competencies and Generic Skills
- Strong technical capability in pavement engineering, pavement materials, roads design, and civil infrastructure delivery
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical, problem-solving, and engineering judgement skills
- Good written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing and client communication
- Ability to manage multiple project deliverables, priorities, and deadlines in a consulting engineering environment
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills with the ability to interface successfully with traffic, civil, geotechnical, planning, environmental, and construction teams
- Professional, proactive, quality-focused, and safety-conscious approach to project delivery
- Sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and relevant civil engineering design/documentation tools
