Job Description

Our Commercial Lines Underwriter 1 collaborates with assigned agencies to strengthen our relationships in order to create a consistent underwriting experience that agency partners can depend on. This job also applies insurance coverage rules and guidelines and executes the underwriting decision-making process according to Company underwriting philosophy on a wide range of accounts. Work is performed under limited supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, and enhance positive working relationships with all assigned agency staff
  • Assist in creating, executing, and maintaining a streamlined underwriting experience for agency partners
  • Coordinate the quoting process and presentation of new business and renewal proposals
  • Coordinate and ensure the necessary internal and external communication is taking place and that the proper underwriting process is being followed, for policies with assigned agencies and related tasks
  • Visit agency partners as required
  • Determine and obtain information needed to effectively evaluate exposure to loss
  • Make independent decisions about risks under consideration in accordance with Company policies and guidelines
  • Select, reject, or offer acceptable alternatives for a given risk, within guidelines and philosophy established by the Company, using specialized knowledge and other pertinent information, such as underwriting reports, frequency and severity measures and policy payment history
  • Cross sell other coverage options to agency staff, when applicable, to assist in the profitable growth of their agency
  • Provide service to internal and external customers with a positive, friendly attitude
  • Maintain punctual attendance according to an assigned work schedule at a Company approved work location

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred, Company approved continuing education programs, including attainment of an underwriting designation such as AU or API is preferred
  • Considerable knowledge of insurance and a strong understanding of coverage and corporate underwriting philosophy is required
  • The ability to evaluate information, consider alternatives, and make independent decisions
  • The ability to motivate and train others including the development of training materials as needed
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • The ability to develop product knowledge through participation in approved educational programs
  • The ability to communicate clearly and implement Company objectives and goals
  • Ability to effectively deal with a diverse group of individuals and manage varied factual circumstances

Compensation

We are dedicated to fair and competitive total compensation package that supports the wellbeing and success of our associates. In addition to this, we offer other components like bonus opportunities. For this position, the anticipated annualized starting base pay range is: $65 - $80,000.
