The Compliance and Safety Specialist oversees and coordinates all organization safety activities and programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment for all employees; develops and implements accident prevention programs.
Responsibilities
- Assists with developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs to reduce frequency of accidents and injuries; assists in minimizing overall workers’ compensation costs.
- Plans, implements, communicates, and monitors safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal OSHA rules and regulations, as well as DOT hazardous materials (HazMat) transportation requirements.
- Ensures compliance with DOT regulations for the safe handling, packaging, labeling, and transportation of hazardous materials, including proper use of UN identification numbers and shipping documentation.
- Manages and maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) in accordance with OSHA Hazard Communication (HazCom) standards; ensures accessibility and employee understanding of chemical hazards.
- Supports wastewater management and environmental compliance programs, including proper handling, storage, treatment coordination, and disposal in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Audits various safety and environmental program elements for effectiveness; schedules and performs safety inspections; identifies issues and develops corrective action plans alongside Director of EHS.
- Supervises, controls, and monitors fire prevention and firefighting activities.
- Investigates all accidents, injuries, and hazardous material incidents; recommends and/or coordinates corrective actions through root cause analysis completion.
- Leads safety training programs designed to instruct employees in general safe work practices, chemical safety, hazardous materials handling, SDS usage, DOT HazMat transportation requirements, and job-specific hazards; provides training for new employees.
- Maintains thorough knowledge of federal and state OSHA regulations, DOT HazMat regulations (49 CFR), environmental regulations (including wastewater compliance), and safety codes; distributes and/or posts new or revised standards that affect the company.
- Reviews and responds to OSHA inquiries through partnership with the Director of EHS; supports responses to DOT or environmental regulatory inquiries as needed.
- Identifies potential safety and environmental hazards at all facilities, including chemical and waste handling risks; reports hazards and recommendations for eliminating/reducing to management.
- Assists Director of EHS to coordinate with other departments on design and construction of new equipment, facilities, and work methods to ensure compliance with safety, hazardous material, and environmental regulations.
- Ensures proper labeling, storage, segregation, and documentation of hazardous materials, including assignment and verification of UN numbers and hazard classes.
- Encourages employees and supervisors to report all unsafe conditions and environmental concerns immediately and schedules or coordinates corrective actions as soon as possible.
- Trains employees and supervisors to report any injury, spill, or hazardous material exposure that occurs on the job immediately.
- Maintains records for statistical measurement and conformance to standard safety and environmental practices, including HazMat shipping records and SDS documentation.
- Prepares and maintains required safety, environmental, and regulatory reports, including those related to hazardous materials and wastewater compliance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
- Knowledge of EHS/LMS system operation.
Qualifications
- 3–5 years related experience; bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) preferred
- 10% domestic travel
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and compliance standards
- Working knowledge of DOT hazardous materials transportation regulations (49 CFR), including classification, packaging, labeling, placarding, and use of UN identification numbers
- Experience managing Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and implementing Hazard Communication (HazCom) programs
- Familiarity with wastewater management practices and environmental compliance requirements (EPA and local/state regulations)
- Experience with hazardous waste handling, storage, and disposal preferred

- Demonstrated competence in reacting to and handling emergencies, including chemical spills and hazardous material incidents
- Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand the primary language(s) used in the workplace
- Bilingual skills a plus
- GSP, CSP a plus
- DOT HazMat Certification or training preferred
- First Aid/CPR/AED Trainer a plus
- OSHA 10/30 Instructor a plus
