Constable - Experienced

All experienced officer transfers begin their career at VicPD in Patrol. Once two years in Patrol has been completed, officers may transfer to specialty units in accordance with departmental career path guidelines.


Job Description:

  • Uniform position, may include plain clothes work as required
  • High visibility focused enforcement of Criminal Laws, Federal and Provincial Statutes and Municipal Bylaws
  • Conduct patrols by foot or vehicle and liaise with diverse community members
  • Work collaboratively with other VicPD teams to develop plans and strategies to address operational priorities, solve and prevent crime
  • Work 12-hour rotational shifts (two day shifts, followed by two night shifts, followed by four days off)
  • Effectively communicate with members of the community and possess strong de-escalation skills.
  • Where reasonable and necessary, use proportional force in accordance with VicPD Policy, the Criminal Code and the National Use of Force Framework to apprehend offenders and protect the public.
  • Conduct Person / Vehicle / Traffic control as required
  • Assist the BC Coroner with sudden death investigations
  • Achieve and maintain qualifications as per Department Policy and Provincial Policing Standards


Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Graduate of a recognized police academy in Canada
  • Able to pass the Occupational Health Assessment (fitness and functional movement testing)
  • Vision/Hearing standards at the recruit level
  • Possess a valid class 5 BC Driver’s Licence or equivalent from another province

  • Ability to effectively communicate and liaise with various community members
  • Ability to solve and manage complex problems
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with members of our diverse communities including: youth, unhoused persons, marginalized and high-risk individuals
