Content Coordinator

Summary:

Content coordinators serve as liaisons between designers in our California Design Center and assignment editors from the publications served by the Design Center. A content coordinator’s primary responsibility is to gather materials - stories, art, and associated elements - from Southern California and Bay Area assignment editors and prepare content packages for designers. Duties include, but are not limited to, participating in news planning meetings, reviewing and preparing planning budgets for print publications, gathering and sometimes creating content for publication, reviewing and/or editing content, assisting in the management of page flow on deadline, as well as proofing, checking, and clearing pages for print sites.

What you will do:

  • Carry out planning from assignment desk editors by attending news meetings and reviewing story budgets, and assisting as needed in space planning for print editions, which may include editorial decision-making in terms of supplementing the local news report with pickups from sister publications or wire services

  • Manage content from assignment desks once the content is released for publication, gathering elements - stories, sidebars, photos, graphics, etc. - into content packages so that designers can efficiently produce pages

  • Create content, such as refers, explainers, breakouts, pull-quotes, captions, and other elements needed by designers. Creating content will often involve communicating with assignment editors and/or reporters, and in some cases, may require independent news gathering or fact-checking

  • Edit and/or review content as needed, cutting copy to accommodate available space, for example. Such changes must be coordinated with assigning editors and/or reporters

  • Facilitate page flow to meet staggered deadlines across multiple publications, prioritizing work according to upcoming deadlines and designers’ workloads

  • Review pages produced by designers, checking pages prior to their release to print sites

What you will bring:

  • College degree preferred

  • Prior news media experience is required, with experience on both assignment desks and production desks desired but not required

  • Excellent language skills plus an understanding of news production in the digital age

  • Strong knowledge of the use of grammar, spelling, headlines, and photographs, along with an understanding of AP and local style, news judgment, and awareness of the community

  • Extensive computer usage and rapid, accurate typing ability

  • Capacity to collaborate professionally across departments, gracefully resolve conflicts when negotiating content changes with editors and reporters, and effectively gather information through documents, internet research, and other investigative efforts

  • Experience developing immediate solutions to problems dictated by design and/or space requirements of print publications, thinking creatively and critically to identify and create additional elements that enhance design and presentation

  • Be a self-starter who is expected to take initiative and who will receive regular direction and advice from the supervising editor and other editors, as appropriate

  • Ability to handle varied situations within tight time frames using strong judgment to spot and resolve content problems, while effectively communicating how words, photos, and design impact the newspaper’s overall goals to editors and designers
