Controller

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to oversee the company's accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls. The Controller will ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records while providing strategic financial insights to support business growth.

This role partners closely with executive leadership to manage the company's financial health, improve processes, and ensure compliance with all applicable accounting standards and regulations.

*This position is based in Washington, DC and follows a hybrid work schedule. Candidates must be able to reliably commute to the office on designated in-office days.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and bank reconciliations.
  • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and monitor the company's financial position.
  • Prepare annual budgets and financial forecasts while providing variance analysis and recommendations.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and all federal, state, and local financial reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, tax advisors, and financial institutions.
  • Oversee tax filings, business licenses, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Analyze financial performance and provide strategic recommendations to leadership regarding profitability, cost management, and operational efficiencies.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting team members while fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Support executive leadership with financial modeling, scenario planning, and special projects as needed.
  • Assist with system implementations, process automation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field
  • CPA designation preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Experience managing the full accounting cycle and financial close process.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar ERP systems).
  • Experience with payroll systems and financial planning tools is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Target Salary Range: $130,000–$150,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and geographic location. Exceptional candidates with extensive experience or specialized expertise may be considered above this range, while candidates with developing experience may fall below the target range.
