Controls Technician - Job Description Summary
The Site Controls Technician primary responsibility is the day-to-day support of the site Instrumentation & Electrical equipment, and Factory Controls & IT systems. Additionally, they will help execute the strategy for Factory Controls & IT Asset Health Check Program.
Responsibilities include supporting the Controls Engineer and Senior Controls Technicians on site and regional projects and supporting Area Coverage Technicians with controls related work and other complex troubleshooting as needed. Key concepts of the role include, but not limited to, developing control concepts, program design, coding and implementation, instrumentation selection and operator interface development.
Additionally, the Controls Technician also executes the modification and installation of control systems utilizing the Change Control process for assigned areas; transfers knowledge of control systems and electrical projects; supports and maintains controls systems for assigned areas, and operator interface systems.
Minimum Qualifications
- 2-year Technical Degree/Certificate (Electrical/Electronic/Controls/Automation) or equivalent experience
- 1 -2 years Instrumentation & Electrical, Electronics, or Factory Controls & IT experience, including production system troubleshooting and problem resolution
- Must be able to work independently on live electrical panels
- Minimum of 1 year time in role in your current position
- Successfully completed Controls Access Training through WAC Technical Training Lab and validated with Controls Team
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years Instrumentation & Electrical, Electronics, or Factory Controls & IT experience, including production system troubleshooting and problem resolution
- Familiar with Virtual Infrastructure Administration, Server Administration, & Database Administration
- Familiar with Cisco Equipment Architecture
- Familiar with Factory IT / Cybersecurity
Key responsibilities:
Delivery of Control & IT Solutions related Services
- Provide support to Operations, Industrial Engineering, and Engineering teams for the delivery of Factory Controls and IT initiatives.
- Assist with engineering projects by contributing to the design and checkout of control systems.
- Coordinate and support activities of contractors, controls technicians, and other associates during installation of instrumentation, PLC-based control systems, and PC-based operator interfaces.
- Develop job aids, user guides, system documentation, standard operating procedures, and training materials for plant automation systems primarily in their area of responsibility.
- Identify improvement opportunities and recommend changes to enhance plant performance.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of site engineering standards for programming and system design.
- Perform programming, testing, and debugging for new systems and enhancements to existing systems.
- Modify and maintain applications such as Wonderware, Rockwell, Siemens, ZPI, and Traksys to support engineering projects.
- Provide technical support for control technologies across Level I, Level II, Level III, and Factory IT systems.
Provide Input for Factory Control & IT Asset Health Check Program For Their Area of Responsibility
- Assess the lifecycle stage of each infrastructure solution and service, and develop an appropriate action plan to ensure reliability, compliance, and performance.
Business Engagement and Communication (for assigned areas)
- Provide support on topics related to Factory Controls and IT Infrastructure.
- Communicate and deliver training on Factory Controls & IT Infrastructure solutions and services to engineering, maintenance, and production teams as needed.
- Demonstrate expertise in Factory Controls & IT, with a clear understanding of business challenges and opportunities for improvement.
- Troubleshoot Allen-Bradley PLCs, instrumentation, and electrical equipment effectively.
- Collaborate with shift-based production and maintenance teams to address breakdowns or reliability issues involving control systems.
- Maintain a high level of technical competency through continuous learning and application.
- Train and assist non-technical users in operating plant floor automation systems.
