Crane Superintendent Job Description (Industrial Construction)
Position Title:
Crane Superintendent
Position Summary
The Crane Superintendent is responsible for the overall planning, coordination, supervision, and safe execution of all crane and heavy lifting operations on industrial construction, maintenance, and turnaround projects. This position provides leadership to crane operators, rigging personnel, and subcontractors while ensuring compliance with company policies, client requirements, OSHA regulations, and industry best practices. The Crane Superintendent develops lift strategies, manages crane resources, and ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently, and within schedule and budget requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee all crane and heavy lifting activities on assigned projects.
- Develop lift plans and coordinate critical and engineered lift operations.
- Lead and supervise crane operators, riggers, signal persons, and support personnel.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, ASME, ANSI, site-specific safety requirements, and company policies.
- Conduct pre-lift meetings, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and daily safety briefings.
- Coordinate crane mobilization, demobilization, assembly, disassembly, and inspections.
- Review crane capacities, load charts, ground-bearing pressures, and lift paths.
- Work closely with project management, construction management, engineering, and client representatives to schedule lifting activities.
- Monitor equipment utilization and productivity to maximize operational efficiency.
- Verify crane operators and rigging personnel maintain required certifications and qualifications.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and equipment-related concerns, implementing corrective actions as required.
- Maintain lifting documentation, inspection records, permits, and compliance reports.
- Assist with estimating crane requirements and manpower needs for future projects.
- Manage subcontracted crane service providers and ensure contractual compliance.
- Support project planning for large industrial facilities including refineries, petrochemical plants, LNG facilities, power plants, manufacturing facilities, and heavy industrial construction projects.

Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 7–10 years of industrial crane operations experience.
- Minimum 3–5 years in a supervisory or superintendent role overseeing crane operations.
- Extensive knowledge of mobile cranes, crawler cranes, tower cranes, gantry systems, and heavy lift equipment.
- Strong understanding of rigging fundamentals, load calculations, lift planning, and crane setup requirements.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations, ASME B30 standards, and industry lifting practices.
- Ability to read construction drawings, specifications, and engineered lift plans.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and project management systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- NCCCO Crane Operator Certification.
- NCCCO Lift Director Certification.
- NCCCO Rigger and Signalperson Certifications.
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification.
- Experience in refinery, petrochemical, LNG, power generation, or industrial maintenance environments.
- Experience managing critical lifts exceeding 75% of crane capacity or lifts involving multiple cranes.

- Advanced knowledge of crane operations and heavy lift methodology.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple crews and concurrent lifting activities.
- Strong focus on safety leadership and incident prevention.
- Excellent planning, scheduling, and resource management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with craft personnel, management, clients, and subcontractors.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to access active construction and industrial work sites.
- Frequent standing, walking, climbing, and navigating uneven terrain.
- Ability to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, and fall protection equipment.
- Ability to travel and work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and turnaround schedules as required.
