Customs Agent -
Job Summary
As a DHL Express Customs Agent, you will be the key to ensuring smooth international trade. You will meticulously review import/export documentation, classify shipments by complex customs codes, and manage electronic submissions for efficient clearance. Working alongside pickup and delivery teams, you will ensure all shipments comply with DHL's standards and government regulations, facilitating the safe and efficient movement of goods while upholding DHL's commitment to exceptional service.
Key Tasks
Responsible for the preparation of all necessary customs documentation to expedite import, export, and transshipment procedures in a timely, efficient, and effective manner, for all arriving/departing consignments.
Registers incoming and outgoing correspondence.
Performs record keeping functions, both electronic and manual filing
Performs data entry functions in relevant platforms (e.g., Islander), as well as post entries in online systems.
Interfaces with middle and upper-level customs officials, government agencies, DHL departments and customers in customs related matters
Remains abreast of changes in customs laws, rules, regulations, practices, and procedures to maintain compliance.
Maintains on-going efforts to influence, impact or change customs clearance procedures and processes to meet or exceed DHL service standards.
Ensures station’s full compliance with customs and tax laws, consistent with DHL policies, procedures, practices, and rules.
Prepares accurate and timely reports detailing customs duties, tariffs, fees, and taxes to enable efficient and effective cost management.
Prepares and expedites international manifests to ensure responsive and efficient customs clearance.
Responsible for the maintenance of customs related records to ensure ease of retrieval and safe keeping.
Monitors appropriate SQI standards and reports on variances as required.
Maintains a daily log of shipments being cleared by DHL, as well as exports.
Maintains a daily activity log of brokerage personnel activities.
Maintains a daily log regarding delays in clearance and other issues.
Assists in customer service processes by dealing with inquiries and handling complaints and, advising customers of document requirements as needed.
Ensures there are no leakages due to internal delays.
Supplies origin stations with local charges, processes, documentation required, etc.
Oversees the contacting of consignees regarding duty amounts, bureau of standards issues, queries on paperwork held in customs and other customs related issues for both freight and express shipments.
Resolves shipment irregularities and takes appropriate action when dealing with dangerous or suspect shipments.
Reproduces original paperwork for customers who misplace them.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned and required.
Skills and Qualifications
Effective communication skills, written and verbal.
Customer service and interpersonal skills
Working knowledge of computer capabilities and related information systems
Working knowledge of international laws and standards; working knowledge of carriage of goods laws including dangerous goods regulations
A valid General Driver’s License with safe driving record
No criminal convictions
Customs Brokers License
High School Degree or its equivalent
Minimum of one year experience in customs brokering or freight forwarding
Fluency in English (written and verbal).
