Data and Insights Analyst
Type: Fixed-term until August 2027
We’re looking for a driven Data & Insights Analyst to join our Business Insights team to champion and promote evidence-based decision-making across Taituarā / Regulatory and Identity Services branch.

The Engagement, Data and Innovation Group leads the development of new products, services and operational policies to enhance the delivery of services in line with Branch priorities. The group provides a range of services to the Regulatory and Identity Services branch, including operational policy, market service, product strategy and innovation, design and content, and data analytics.
The Business Insights team is one of the branch’s main data analytics teams, made up of data engineers, data analysts / dashboard developers, and data scientists who work together across the full data lifecycle: from data sourcing and modelling to advanced analytics and insight delivery. We focus on the delivery of data marts, business intelligence (BI) products, statistical modelling and data analysis that creates valuable insights to influence operational and policy decision-making.

Reporting to Manager Business Insights, this is an exciting role that will be responsible for collecting, reporting, and analysing data to deliver data products (e.g. reports, analysis, dashboard) to support decision-making, promote a data-driven culture and make a difference to the essential services we provide for Aotearoa. This Data Analyst position is an excellent fit for someone looking to join an end-to-end data team that is embedded in service delivery, as it offers a unique opportunity to directly influence business outcomes, collaborate with key stakeholders, and translate data into insights that enhance operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
- Work directly with various stakeholders to understand their data needs and provide timely, accurate insights and reports that support business decisions.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders to ensure alignment on goals and responsiveness to data needs.
- Perform analysis to identify trends, patterns, and key metrics that impact service delivery and other operational areas.
- Assist Senior Data Analysts in capturing and documenting the business rules, assumptions, and logic used in analytics and reporting.
- Work closely with Data Engineers to profile data sources, identify data quality issues, and support data cleaning and transformation activities.
- Regularly monitor data for inconsistencies or errors and work with others in the team to implement solutions for maintaining data accuracy and reliability.
- Identify areas for improvement within data handling, reporting processes, or analytics workflows and suggest solutions to enhance efficiency.
- Develop, automate and deploy Business Intelligence dashboards to provide visibility, improve business operations and uncover insights.

Essential
- Strong experience and/or knowledge of data analytics, with a background in reporting and analysis, and a proven ability to turn data into actionable insights that drive decision-making.
- Strong SQL and Excel skills, with the ability to query, join and transform data from multiple sources.
- Experience building dashboards and reports, and working with BI tools, Power BI strongly preferred.
- Good data visualisation and data storytelling skills.
- A very strong customer focus and the ability to engage with business users to understand and gather their requirements.
- Proven ability to deliver complex projects and work as part of a wider team to achieve successful outcomes.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to tailor complex messages to a range of non-technical audiences and stakeholders.
Desirable
- Exposure to Microsoft Fabric or a comparable modern cloud data platform (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks).
- Experience with Power Automate for workflow automation.
- Experience with Google Analytics (GA4) or similar web analytics tools.
- Experience with other programming languages such as Python or R.
- Understanding of or experience working in an agile environment.
