Responsibilities
Job Summary:
The Data Engineer is a technically capable, self-sufficient role responsible for hands-on development and delivery within ALTOUR's Snowflake data platform. This role is designed for an individual who is able to work independently within a defined scope, taking ownership of their workstream from requirements through to delivery without requiring close day-to-day direction. Operating within a small, experienced team, the Data Engineer will be expected to manage their own work queue, make appropriate technical decisions within established standards, and proactively communicate progress and blockers. The ability to self-direct and deliver quality output with minimal supervision is a core requirement of this role — not a desirable attribute.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Development & Delivery • Design, build and maintain data pipelines and transformations within Snowflake, working to defined architectural standards • Write clean, well-tested, and documented Snowflake SQL and Snowpark (Python) code • Take full ownership of assigned workstreams from briefing through to production deployment • Manage personal task backlog, estimate effort accurately, and deliver to agreed timelines • Raise blockers early and propose solutions rather than waiting for direction • Integrate Snowflake with upstream ETL tooling (Talend) and downstream BI platforms (Power BI)
Architecture Input & Standards Adherence • Work within established data modelling and engineering standards without requiring constant oversight • Apply architectural guidance to implementation decisions, using judgement where gaps exist • Flag design questions or ambiguities proactively, with a suggested approach ready for discussion • Document design decisions and maintain technical specifications as living artefacts
Performance & Quality • Write performant SQL from the outset, applying appropriate clustering, materialization, and warehouse selection • Contribute to code reviews with constructive, technically grounded feedback • Test deliverables rigorously before handover, taking responsibility for output quality
AI / ML Capabilities • Develop familiarity with Snowflake Cortex features and contribute to AI-powered data product development • Implement ML function integrations where directed, with ability to research and self-learn new platform features
Communication & Collaboration • Provide clear, concise written and verbal updates on progress without requiring prompting • Collaborate effectively in a small team where self-organization is essential • Participate constructively in planning and review cycles
Qualifications
Education, Knowledge and Skills:
Required • Solid hands-on Snowflake SQL experience (2+ years) • Proven experience building and maintaining data pipelines end-to-end • Solid understanding of data modelling fundamentals • Snowpark (Python) capability, or demonstrated ability to self-learn new platform tooling • Experience with Git and version control practices • Demonstrated ability to self-manage workloads and deliver independently with minimal direction • Track record of owning delivery end-to-end including testing and documentation
Preferred • Experience with Snowflake Cortex or AI/ML functions • Familiarity with dbt or equivalent transformation tooling • Experience with ETL tools such as Talend or similar • Power BI or equivalent BI platform experience • SQL Server / T-SQL background • Experience in the Travel Management Company or broader travel industry • Agile / sprint-based delivery experience
Key Competencies • Hands-on Snowflake platform development • Data pipeline engineering • Data modelling & transformation • Self-direction & autonomous delivery • Performance tuning & optimization • AI/ML feature adoption • Technical communication & collaboration
