Position Overview

Zelis is seeking an experienced Senior Data Scientist with strong data modeling and machine learning expertise to drive advanced analytics across healthcare and payments platforms. This role focuses on designing scalable data models, building predictive solutions, and translating complex data into actionable business insights.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain data models (conceptual, logical, and physical) to support analytics, machine learning, and reporting needs.
  • Lead development of statistical, predictive, and machine learning models across healthcare and payment datasets.
  • Perform feature engineering, data transformation, and model optimization on large-scale structured and semi-structured data.
  • Collaborate with data engineering, product, and business teams to align data models with product and analytics requirements.
  • Analyze high-volume transactional and operational data to derive actionable insights.
  • Validate model accuracy, scalability, and performance; implement continuous improvement strategies.
  • Ensure data quality, consistency, and governance across analytical datasets.
  • Communicate insights through storytelling, dashboards, and executive presentations.
  • Mentor junior data scientists and promote best practices in data science and modeling.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in Data Science, Analytics, or Applied ML roles.
  • Strong hands-on experience in data modeling (dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, analytical data models).
  • Proficiency in Python or R and data science libraries (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, TensorFlow/PyTorch).
  • Advanced knowledge of statistics, probability, predictive modeling, and hypothesis testing.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with complex, high-volume datasets.
  • Experience deploying models into production environments.
  • Solid understanding of ETL/ELT pipelines and data transformation processes.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Good to Have

  • Experience in healthcare, payments, fintech, or insurance domains.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
  • Experience with big data technologies (Spark, Databricks).
  • Familiarity with MLOps, model monitoring, and lifecycle management.
  • Knowledge of data privacy and compliance standards (HIPAA, SOC).
  • Experience with data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau).
