Founded in 2004, by Poonam Bagai, herself a cancer survivor, CanKids\nKidsCan is a national NGO working in India to address the needs of children\nwith cancer and their families. CanKids is dedicated to driving Change for\nChildhood Cancer in India with an ambitious goal to achieve Universal health\ncoverage through 100% Access2Care & 100% Financial Protection by 2030\naligned to the WHO GICC (Global Initiative on Childhood Cancer) and Sustainable\nDevelopment Goals, thereby securing the Rights to health, education, childhood,\npain\-free and palliative care and the Right to be heard for all children with\ncancer (0\-19 years) in India.<\/span>

Department Overview<\/span><\/b>
<\/p>

The Treatment Support Program (TSP) provides comprehensive dietary and\nnutritional care to pediatric oncology patients. Dietitians and nutritionists\nwork as part of the holistic care team, creating individualized nutrition plans\nbased on patients\u2019 medical needs, promoting good dietary health, and raising\nawareness about the role of food in health and recovery.<\/span>

Role Overview<\/span><\/b>
<\/p>

The Dietitian is responsible for developing personalized diet plans for\npediatric oncology patients, promoting healthy eating habits, providing\ncounseling and nutritional assessments, and implementing nutrition\-based\ninterventions for inpatients, outpatients, and critical care patients. The\nDietitian also coordinates education and awareness sessions, contributes to\nfood distribution, maintains nutrition records, and collaborates in training\nand research activities.<\/span>

Key Responsibilities<\/span><\/b>

A. Nutrition and Dietary Support<\/span><\/b>
<\/p>

  • Conduct nutritional assessments and\n design tailored meal plans.<\/span>

  • Administer the Dry Nutritional\n Supplement Program and ensure proper documentation.<\/span>
    <\/li>
  • Maintain a repository of nutritional\n data and recipes.<\/span>
    <\/li><\/ul>

    B. Hygiene and Health Support<\/span><\/b>
    <\/p>

    • Design and display hygiene posters in\n hospital wards.<\/span>
      <\/li>
    • Plan and implement Health and Hygiene\n Kit programs.<\/span>
      <\/li>
    • Coordinate with hospital doctors to\n develop health education materials.<\/span>
      <\/li>
    • Support hematological needs including\n blood donation camp coordination.<\/span>
      <\/li><\/ul>

      C. Inpatient (IPD) Care<\/span><\/b>
      <\/p>

      • Perform baseline nutrition assessments\n for admitted children.<\/span>
        <\/li>
      • Conduct daily rounds and provide\n personalized Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT).<\/span>
        <\/li>
      • Calculate dietary requirements (24\-hour\n recall) and prepare nutrition charts.<\/span>
        <\/li>
      • Counsel patients and caregivers on\n nutrition and its role in treatment and recovery.<\/span>
        <\/li><\/ul>

        D. Outpatient (OPD) Care<\/span><\/b>
        <\/p>

        • Perform nutrition assessments for OPD\n patients.<\/span>
          <\/li>
        • Plan diet strategies using 24\-hour or\n 7\-day recalls.<\/span>
          <\/li>
        • Ensure regular follow\-ups and provide\n preventive nutrition care.<\/span>
          <\/li>
        • Distribute nutritional supplements and\n maintain related documentation.<\/span>
          <\/li><\/ul>

          E. ICU Care<\/span><\/b>
          <\/p>

          • Conduct daily ICU rounds to assess and\n manage critical nutrition needs.<\/span>
            <\/li>
          • Coordinate with ICU teams for managing\n patient MNT.<\/span>
            <\/li><\/ul>

            F. Food/Supplement Management<\/span><\/b>
            <\/p>

            • Oversee Mid\-Day Meal (MDM) distribution\n and ensure quality, quantity, and hygiene.<\/span>
              <\/li>
            • Coordinate with vendors for food\n delivery and packaging.<\/span>
              <\/li>
            • Modify recipes based on patient needs\n and seasonality.<\/span>
              <\/li>
            • Identify eligible patients for special\n supplements and manage procurement and distribution with donor\n coordination.<\/span>

              G. Education and Training<\/span><\/b>
              <\/p>

              • Conduct group education sessions for\n patients and caregivers thrice weekly.<\/span>
                <\/li>
              • Organize monthly educational talks\n during parent support group meetings.<\/span>
                <\/li>
              • Train new CanKids staff, joiners, and\n interns on hospital nutrition processes.<\/span>
                <\/li><\/ul>

                H. Team Collaboration and Administration<\/span><\/b>

                • Participate in monthly CanKids meetings\n and prepare reports.<\/span>
                  <\/li>
                • Raise indents and coordinate with staff\n for supplement distribution.<\/span>
