Provides medical nutrition therapy to patients of different age groups using appropriate standards, validated assessment tools and evidence-based standards of practice in accordance with the department's policies. Develops, implements and communicates the patient's nutritional plan of care which are documented in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR). Provides counseling to inpatients and outpatients on their nutritional needs. The Dietitian, Nutrition Support is responsible for the nutritional management of critical care patients. This position is assigned to any critical care unit to provide nutritional services compatible with established standards of practice and in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Responsibilities
A day in the life of a Dietitian, Nutrition Support at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.) This process includes communicating with the patient, parent and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
- Obtains and interprets nutritionally related information in terms of patient needs, utilizing knowledge of growth and development, and an understanding of the range of treatment needed by patients over the age span from neonates to geriatrics.
- Instructs patients / significant others on TPN, PPN, external feedings, and other therapeutic diets as prescribed by the physician / team and provides follow-ups as needed.
- Documents pertinent nutrition information in patients' medical charts.
- Writes orders for TPN and all additives.
- Creates and collaborates on nutrition support education, training, presentations, competencies for registered dietitians, physicians, pharmacy and other patient care personnel.
- Audits TPN prescriptions monthly for appropriateness and accuracy.
- Performs work related functions in an environment that could result in exposure to infectious patients, materials and hazardous substances.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Qualifications
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Nutrition or related field from an approved college.
- At least 2 years of critical care clinical experience.
- Computer Literacy.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- Master's Degree in Nutrition or Dietetics related field is strongly encouraged.
- Computer proficiency in a Windows environment; working knowledge of MyDining and EPIC.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Registered Dietician License.
- National Board of Nutrition Support Certification (CNSC) within one year of hire; Certification renewals within one year of expiration date.
