Director, Government Affairs
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
The Senior Manager/Director will be primarily responsible and accountable for the following:
(1) Government Affairs Strategy:
- Identifying, monitoring and evaluating US federal, state and policy developments, including tracking legislation, rulemakings, hearings and other proceedings.
- Analyzing proposed legislative and regulatory actions in conjunction with internal subject matter experts to determine the potential impact on the organization and developing appropriate public policy positions at the U.S. federal and state levels
- Identifying and creating U.S. federal and state, legislative opportunities to deliver on corporate priorities.
- Partnering with business units and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment on policy priorities.
(2) Government Relations and Engagement:
- Representing the Sherwin- Williams Company before government officials (Congress, Agencies, State Government, Federal Government) and staff in Washington, DC and at events throughout the U.S.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with government representatives and regulators at the federal and state levels.
- Support high-level meetings between executives and key stakeholders, including congressional, state, regulatory, and industry association and alliance partners, to promote and advocate company’s public policy objectives.
- Advocating for legislative and regulatory outcomes and defined public policy objectives.
- Coordinating responses to internal and external inquiries related to government issues.
- Represent Sherwin-Williams before relevant U.S. trade associations.
(3) Public Affairs:
- Assisting in the development of positions and communications to support government affairs strategies, including internal and external communications, newsletters, position papers, grassroots alerts and issue briefings.
- Creating and executing opportunities for educating government officials on The Sherwin-Williams Company; its products, facilities, stores and research/development.
- Supporting the development of communication strategies to effectively promote government affairs to internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordinating and collaborating with national and local associations, organizations and partners with respect to public policy and legislative issues.
(4) Management:
- Oversee and facilitate continued career development of Manager of Government Affairs.
- Oversee multiple consultants for Federal and State, including identifying and regularly evaluating company needs for the state level government affairs consultant resources.
- Support giving strategy for executives and/or explore opportunities for political action committee (PAC)
This role will report to 505 9th Street, NW #830 Washington, DC.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in public affairs, government relations, economics or related business discipline from an accredited institution
- A minimum of 8-12+ years of experience in public policy and in-depth knowledge of government at the federal, state, and international levels is required.
- Must possess proven ability to develop, maintain relationships in a bipartisan and bicameral manner
- Experience engaging government officials with a track record of success
- Former experience in government.
- Proactive, strategic thinker, strong work ethic; sound judgement, diplomacy and ethics
- Solution-orientated, flexible, and collaborative.
- Results-driven professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without needing sponsorship for employment work visa status now or in the future
Preferred:
- An advanced degree in public affairs, government relations, economics or related business discipline preferred.
- Former in-house corporate experience or representing private sector.
- Background in chemical, environmental, tax or trade sectors.
