Director, NY Market Policy
Director, NY Market Policy
Company
Orenda is on a mission to make the grid more efficient with renewable energy projects and proprietary asset management technology. We develop, build, own and operate battery energy storage projects in dense urban environments to bridge the gap between renewables and electricity consumption.
We are a dynamic, NYC-based company at the forefront of a new industry. We are seeking highly motivated and incredibly talented individuals who wish to contribute to our important mission.
About the Team
The Strategy team at Orenda leads the scouting, analysis, and validation of new investment opportunities. The team works cross-functionally with other business units to translate research findings into implementation plans that move opportunities from concept to scale. In addition, the team monitors policy developments in the markets where the company operates, forecasts their impact, and advocates for favorable changes.
About the Role
We are seeking a highly proactive and analytical Director, NY Market Policy (internally recognized as our Market Monitor) to shape New York State and City market policy, driving a clean energy transition. Reporting closely to the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), you will serve as a primary external voice for Orenda. In this role, you will monitor ongoing policy matters, track key dockets to keep our operations ahead of regulatory shifts, and proactively advocate for market structures that accelerate energy storage deployment. You will turn regulatory complexities into actionable business strategies and risk-mitigation plans that align with the state’s climate goals.
What you’ll do
- Policy Monitoring & Market Intelligence: Proactively track regulatory, programmatic, and tariff changes across NYISO, New York utilities, and state/city agencies. Summarize complex modifications, assess their strategic relevance, and clearly identify which internal business units need to take action.
- Regulatory Database Ownership: Build and maintain a structured, centralized tracking system for all active New York policy matters—documenting status, critical deadlines, key stakeholders, and internal accountability—ensuring a continuous single source of truth for the company.
- Risk & Opportunity Mapping: Formulate structured impact assessments to identify commercial risks and market opportunities early. Partner with the CSO to propose specific technical or operational mitigation and capture plans complete with clear timelines, owners, and decision gates.
- Evidence-Based Advocacy: Develop, draft, and execute formal advocacy strategies, including written comments, regulatory proposals, and targeted stakeholder outreach. Establish clear, objective frameworks to measure advocacy progress against commercial goals.
- Executive Briefing & Stakeholder Readiness: Prepare internal stakeholders and leadership for critical external engagements. Author crisp briefing documents, talking points, and strategic meeting readouts that seamlessly translate dense policy nuances into operational direction.
- Cross-Functional Orchestration: Own policy-related initiatives from inception through to closure. Act as the bridge between regulatory developments and internal execution by documenting next steps, communicating executive decisions, and driving follow-through across multiple internal teams and external partners.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Policy, Economics, Engineering, Law) or equivalent practical experience.
- Domain Expertise: Deep knowledge of the New York energy market, including utility tariffs, distribution-level programs, NYISO tariffs, and utility infrastructure challenges. Familiarity with Department of Public Service (DPS) dockets is highly preferred.
- Experience: 7+ years of progressive experience in regulatory affairs, energy policy, or market development, including at least 2 years of specific exposure to New York State or New York City policy matters. Experience from the solar, energy storage, or broader renewable sectors is highly valued.
Skills and Attributes
- Analytical Mindset & Critical Thinking: A structural mindset with the ability to navigate massive amounts of regulatory text and distill it into highly usable business frameworks. Strong ability to evaluate technical and financial trade-offs.
- Ownership & Execution: Ability to work effectively as an expert individual contributor, taking full ownership of the policy monitoring function from tracking through to internal communication. Proven success in navigating regulatory ambiguity independently.
- Influence & Persuasion: Strong ability to communicate and persuade effectively in complex group environment. An active listener who asks incisive questions, understands the underlying motivations of deeply opposed stakeholders, and tailors arguments effectively to steer outcomes while remaining firmly fact-based.
- Intellectual Rigor & Integrity: Driven by operational accuracy. Clearly distinguishes facts from assumptions, credits collaborators appropriately, and operates with the professional maturity to comfortably say “I don’t know” while moving quickly to close the gap.
- Strategic Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to distill dense, highly complex regulatory nuances into clear, operational direction for internal stakeholders and external audiences.
- Executive Presence: Possesses the confidence, professional maturity, and credibility to act as a leader and a unified voice for the company in front of trade associations, regulatory bodies, and senior leadership.
