Overview

The Director of Annual Giving is responsible for leading all aspects of the development and implementation of a dynamic annual fundraising program to increase gift revenue from alumni and friends of the Yale School of Management (Yale SOM) through a relationship-centered, upgrade-oriented approach. The Director personally cultivates, solicits and stewards a portfolio of Alumni Fund donors and volunteers, leads the program’s strategy, manages staff, and builds the infrastructure that drives sustainable long-term growth. Reports to the Managing Director of Development, Individual Giving and works closely with other members of the Yale SOM Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) team and Yale’s Office of Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D).

Job Duties Assigned

1. Plan and execute a comprehensive, strategic annual giving program including the Yale SOM Alumni Fund and other annual giving vehicles. Oversee all aspects of strategic planning for the Yale SOM Alumni Fund.

2. Manage and personally solicit a portfolio of Alumni Fund donors and volunteers for renewals and upgrades. Be a key partner in actively feeding the donor and volunteer pipeline for increased giving and engagement for Yale SOM.

3. Closely monitor the top 250 LYBUNTs and SYBUNTs and work closely with Prospect Managers to ensure timely gift solicitations and closures of renewals and upgrades.

4. Supervise the Assistant/Associate Director of Annual Giving on executing the SOM Alumni Fund’s major campaigns, including donor challenges, Graduating Class Gifts, student phonathons, Giving Day, the Dean’s Leadership Society, all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Alumni Fund marketing plan, including solicitation and stewardship, and other annual giving initiatives.

5. Work closely with Assistant/Associate Director on analyzing alumni populations and appropriately segmenting messages to inspire increased giving among the SOM Alumni population, including developing ask strings, strategic re-solicits, high-level Alumni Fund proposals, and more.

6. Supervise the Program Coordinator to create and maintain customized reports specifically designed to track annual gifts to the school and provide ways to improve the integrity of revenue and constituent profiles.

7. Collaborate closely with members of the DAR team on strategies to increase dollars raised for Alumni Fund giving.

8. Work closely with SOM and DAR communications team on content for print and web-based materials. Liaise with key members of the AA&D team to improve the donor experience and ease of making a gift to Yale SOM on the web. 9. Partner with DAR colleagues and AA&D to ensure gifts are processed accurately and the SOM’s development systems are meeting the Department’s and donor’s needs. Responsible for overall stewardship of gifts to the Yale SOM Alumni Fund. Develop compelling, accurate, and timely information and stories for the annual philanthropy report. Produce other stewardship materials for Alumni Fund donors throughout the year, such as an annual Alumni Fund report and donor roll.

10. Travel to key cities and hold regular on-campus virtual, and/or phone meetings to solicit and thank annual donors and to meet with and recruit annual giving volunteers and class agents.

3. Superior judgment, diplomacy, discretion, and interpersonal skills and ability to interact with high-profile individuals. Ability to represent the school well in working collegially with peers and colleagues within and outside the school.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Directs, monitors, and assesses needs and directs the application of resources of an administrative University office dealing with one or more major functional areas. 2. Directs and implements solutions to problems that are routine to complex in nature and that affect multiple functional areas of responsibility. 3. Plans and/or participates in planning University activities on a long-term basis to comply with University goals and objectives. 4. Establishes and implements consistent university-wide policies in multiple functional areas of responsibility. 5. Ensures that University office policies and procedures are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. 6. Develops and monitors goals and objectives for managerial and professional staff in compliance with University strategies. 7. Directs a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees. 8. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree in related field and seven years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
