About The Plumbing Authority
The Plumbing Authority is a locally owned, growing residential plumbing company serving the greater Knoxville area, with a smaller and growing commercial book of business. Our team values integrity, professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement — and we're looking for a sales leader who can elevate and coach the way our entire team sells, in the field and on the phone.
Position Overview
The Director of Sales & Training leads the sales performance of the service department — primarily residential, with a growing commercial book of business. This person leads every part of the sales process: how estimates are presented, how options are offered, how revenue is generated through a service plumber's truck or a phone call.
This is a revenue leadership role focused entirely on sales: leading our outbound sales efforts (including phone-based outreach and booking), leading the growth of our smaller commercial account base alongside our primary residential business, leading follow-up and recovery on outstanding estimates, and leading the coaching and development of service plumbers and customer service reps into better, more confident salespeople.
The ideal candidate has a proven personal track record in sales — closing rate, average ticket, revenue generation — and a demonstrated ability to lead and develop other salespeople, whether they're in the field or on the phone. Plumbing experience is not required.
Key Responsibilities
Sales Leadership & Strategy
- Lead, teach, and reinforce the team's sales process from first contact through close, sharpening execution on how options are presented, objections are handled, and follow-up happens.
- Lead morning game-plan meetings focused on sales priorities, talk tracks, and daily goals.
- Lead structured outbound sales initiatives — including phone-based outreach, reactivating past customers, following up on pending estimates, and converting open opportunities.
- Lead the growth of our commercial account base, currently a small share of overall revenue, into a larger, well-managed segment of the business.
- Lead a culture of accountability, confidence, and continuous improvement around selling.
Sales Coaching & Training
- Lead sales coaching for service plumbers — teaching sales skills, communication, and customer trust-building.
- Lead CSR training on effective call scripts, objection handling, and booking techniques to convert more inbound and outbound calls into booked jobs.
- Lead regular ride-alongs and live coaching sessions focused specifically on sales technique.
- Lead structured sales training and onboarding for new hires, both in the field and on the phones.
- Lead KPI tracking and reporting, including average ticket, closing percentage, revenue per technician, membership sales, booking rate, and follow-up conversion rate.
- Lead accountability for technicians and CSRs on sales standards, building individual coaching plans for underperformers.
Follow-Up & Pipeline Management
- Lead the follow-up process on every estimate or proposal that doesn't close on the spot.
- Lead the system for tracking outstanding opportunities so no sale is lost to lack of follow-up.
- Lead coordination with dispatch and marketing to identify and act on outbound outreach opportunities.
Leadership Collaboration
- Lead reporting on sales performance and pipeline health in weekly leadership meetings.
- Lead the development of systems, scripts, and training material that raise sales performance company-wide.
- Lead strategy and incentive structures to increase department revenue.
Skills & Talents of the Ideal Candidate
Sales Performance — A proven, provable track record of personal sales success: strong closing rates, average ticket, and consistent revenue generation. Candidates should be ready to discuss real numbers from past roles.
Coaching Ability — Demonstrated success training, mentoring, or developing other salespeople — not just hitting your own numbers, but helping others hit theirs.
Leadership — Comfortable coaching in the field, addressing performance issues directly, and holding people accountable while celebrating wins.
Process & Follow-Up Discipline — A systems thinker who can build a follow-up process that doesn't let opportunities slip through the cracks.
Customer Communication — Builds trust quickly and leaves customers feeling cared for, not sold to — consultative, never pushy.
Integrity — Sells honestly and never chases the highest ticket at the customer's expense. No scare tactics, no exaggeration.
Requirements
- 2–3+ years in a sales leadership, sales training, or sales coaching role (home services, trades, or other high-ticket, in-home sales industries preferred — plumbing experience not required)
- Experience coaching phone-based sales or booking (call center, inside sales, or CSR/dispatch teams) is a strong plus
- Experience with commercial or B2B sales a plus
- Proven, documented personal sales track record
- Documented success coaching or mentoring other salespeople
- Valid Tennessee driver's license and clean driving record
- Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills
- Must be dependable, proactive, and professional in all interactions
- Must be Drug Free
Schedule
Monday–Friday, full-time, with occasional flexibility for high-priority sales coaching or leadership needs.
