The Opportunity

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Corporate Accounting, Tax & Treasury, the successful candidate’s primary responsibilities include overseeing the Tax Team, ensuring compliance with the Company’s income and indirect tax filings, leading the quarterly tax provision reporting and assisting with various other tax projects.

Key Activities

Core Tax Reporting, Compliance and Planning Responsibilities

  • Review and prepare income tax provision for quarterly reporting.
  • Oversee the tax team responsible for preparation of all Canadian tax filings, including income and indirect tax return filings.
  • Lead tax compliance and assist with tax planning for potential transactions and internal restructurings.
  • Analyze and manage budget to actual variances for indirect taxes and income taxes.
  • Research and analysis on resident tax issues, resident indirect tax matters and payroll tax questions.
  • Liaise with CRA, Revenue Quebec and other tax authorities to resolve income tax, commodity tax and payroll tax issues.
  • Review details relating to CCA schedules, and other current deductions ensuring appropriate audit support.
  • Provide tax support for major projects as required.
  • Ensure compliance with SIFT rules for income tax filings and quarterly tax reporting.
  • Stay up to date on new legislative changes and ensure appropriately applied to tax filings and reporting.
  • Proactively engage with business partners across the organization to identify tax planning opportunities, support business initiatives and provide practical tax guidance.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Legal, Treasury, Operations, Real Estate and other internal teams to ensure tax considerations are appropriately identified, communicated and incorporated into business decisions and projects.
  • Oversee tax administration matters, including coordinating staff workloads, managing tax related billings and ensuring related processes are completed accurately and on a timely basis.
  • Timely, accurate, clear and to-the-point communication of tax information to leaders and other team members of the organization.

Team Management:

  • Provide daily oversight and manage four direct and indirect reports as leader including recruitment, training, mentorship and performance management. Perform adhoc projects as required as well as process improvement initiatives.
  • Promote a spirit of cooperation and teamwork by taking the initiative to improve the team’s effectiveness.
  • Appropriately delegate and provide development experiences for direct reports.
  • Serve as a source of technical/financial expertise and set meaningful objectives for direct reports.
Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • CPA, CA with a minimum of 8 years of post-designated tax experience in public accounting firm or large company in industry.
  • Completion of the CICA In-Depth course.
  • Experience with multi-entity structures and the taxation of trusts and partnerships.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills and experience in managing and developing staff.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and business acumen.
  • Strong organizational skills and pays close attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Real estate industry experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience using accounting systems, specifically Yardi and OneStream.
  • Proficiency with excel power query and power automate.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong financial and analytical skills, as well as demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, at all levels of the organization.
  • Excel proficiency (intermediate to advanced) is mandatory.
  • Sound managerial and mentoring skills.
  • Strong knowledge of the Canadian Income Tax Act.
