Company Overview
Mergon Corporation is a fast-paced manufacturer specializing in plastic injection molding and blow molding, serving automotive, industrial, and consumer markets. We operate a 200-person facility with 24/5 production capability.
Key Responsibilities
The EHS Manager is responsible for
- Developing, implementing, and continuously improving the site’s Environmental, Health, Safety (EHS) program.
- Overseeing and managing 3rd party contracts for utility, building and grounds maintenance.
- Direct supervision of 1 EHS/Facilities Coordinator
This hands-on leadership role ensures full regulatory compliance, zero harm to people, and uninterrupted production in a high-volume plastics manufacturing environment.
Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS)
- Own and drive the site EHS strategy, policies, procedures, and performance to achieve world-class safety standards and ISO 14001 / ISO 45001 certification (or equivalent).
- Lead risk assessments (JHA, PHA, machine guarding, LOTO, confined space, hot work, ergonomics, chemical handling, etc.) specific to injection molding, blow molding, robotics, extrusion, and auxiliary processes.
- Carry out regular audits to ensure high standards of performance are maintained in accordance with contract requirements and company policy.
- Manage all OSHA, EPA, state, and local regulatory compliance (air permits, storm water, hazardous waste, SPCC, EPCRA Tier II & Form R, wastewater, etc.) and own/drive sustainability initiatives.
- Validate new equipment, machines, and workstations for regulatory and company safety standards.
- Chair the Safety Committee and drive employee engagement through behavioral-based safety observations, safety talks, and near-miss reporting.
- Lead incident investigations using root-cause analysis tools and ensure corrective/preventive actions are implemented and sustained.
- Develop and deliver EHS training (new hire orientation, LOTO, forklift, crane, hazardous materials, emergency response, contractor training, etc.).
- Maintain OSHA 300 log, track leading and lagging indicators, and drive year-over-year reduction in TRIR and DART rates.
- Coordinate industrial hygiene monitoring (noise, dust, fumes).
- Coordinate all emergency response teams and procedures.
- Manage workers’ compensation cases and return-to-work programs.
Utilities, Building and Grounds Maintenance Leadership
- Manage contractor(s) responsible for grounds maintenance, building repairs, fire and alarm systems and HVAC systems. Develop preventive and predictive maintenance programs with associated contractors.
- Oversee service contracts (waste removal, pest control, security, janitorial, landscaping, fire systems, etc.).
- Ensure compliance with building codes, fire codes, and insurance requirements.
- Control spending and identify cost-saving opportunities (energy, water, waste).
General
- Act as the primary contact for regulatory inspections, insurance audits, and corporate audits.
- Prepare and present monthly EHS and facilities performance reports to senior leadership.
- Foster a strong safety culture and continuous improvement mindset throughout the organization.
Qualifications & Experience Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field. Related experience may be considered.
- 4+ years of progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing environment (plastics, injection molding, blow molding, or automotive tier supplier experience strongly preferred).
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and state regulations.
- Proven track record of reducing recordable injury rates
- Experience managing hazardous waste, air permits, and wastewater in a manufacturing setting.
- Formal certifications: CSP, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent strongly preferred.
- Hands-on facilities maintenance/project management experience (HVAC, electrical distribution, building automation, etc.).
- Strong leadership skills with experience supervising direct report(s) and cross-functional teams.
- Excellent communication, training, and influencing skills at all levels of the organization.
Preferred
- Lean / Six Sigma Green Belt or higher.
- Experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.
- Familiarity with ISO 50001 and sustainability initiatives.
