Zachry Engineering Corporation is currently seeking a talented and self-motivated Lead Electrical Designer to join our Electrical Department in Charlotte, North Carolina. This position offers the opportunity to lead electrical design efforts on complex Power/Energy and Industrial projects, working closely with engineers, designers, and project leadership.
Position Summary
The Electrical Designer is responsible for applying advanced electrical design practices to assigned projects and leading design execution within the electrical discipline. This role involves planning and executing moderately complex design scopes or leading portions of larger projects, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring designs meet technical, quality, and schedule requirements.
The Electrical Designer selects and adapts design procedures, prepares preliminary designs for engineering approval, reviews work for technical adequacy, and may serve as the design checker or technical lead on assigned projects. The role also provides field support and ensures designs are constructible and accurately documented.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute electrical design activities in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements
- Select, recommend, and apply appropriate design procedures and techniques
- Prepare and coordinate preliminary and detailed electrical designs for engineer review and approval
- Lead and coordinate a team of Electrical Designers, supporting project schedules and budgets in collaboration with Project and Discipline Leads
- Review and check design deliverables for technical accuracy, completeness, and constructability
- Apply strong electrical discipline knowledge while maintaining working familiarity with other discipline design requirements
- Serve as technical design checker when assigned
- Coordinate design execution within the electrical discipline and across engineering and construction teams
- Design and lay out:
- Raceway systems, including underground ductbanks, cable tray, and above-ground conduit
- Lighting systems, including interior, exterior, and roadway lighting
- Grounding systems
- Participate in design reviews and constructability evaluations
- Provide field support, including site visits, field verifications for retrofit projects, and as-built documentation
- Support procurement and installation activities as needed, including on-site coordination
- Ensure adherence to quality, safety, and project execution standards
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Associate Degree with appropriate drafting and design coursework
- Minimum 7+ years of electrical design experience within the Power/Energy and Industrial markets
- Strong working knowledge of electrical raceway, lighting, and grounding system design
- Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD tools, including AutoCAD and/or MicroStation
- Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC)
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Ability to work independently while collaborating within a team environment
- Willingness to travel and work in both office and field environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or Associate Degree in a related technical field
- Experience with AVEVA E3D and/or Bentley MicroStation
- Certificate in Design or Drafting
- Prior experience leading design teams or serving in a lead or checker role
