The Endoscopy Associate performs various direct care activities for the patient under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse by providing direct patient care and related activities as assigned. The Endoscopy Associate also works under the direct supervision of an attending physician, and follows the guidelines and policies of the Department of Nursing
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
1.Performs and records patient's vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respirations.
2.Documents intake and output and other data as assigned
3.Reports any changes in the patients condition or abnormal values to the registered nurse as indicated
4.Sets up equipment for, and assists physician and RN with, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including, but not limited to, Upper Endoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, manometry, spyglass, 24 hr ph, Bravo. Downloads patient information from Bravo and 24 hr. ph into appropriate database
5.Checks equipment function for use during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
6.Cleans, disinfects and/or sterilizes equipment and accessories according to Infection Control guidelines. Documents all processing activities into appropriate logs.
7.Maintains processing machines with scheduled filter changes
8.Troubleshoots equipment and scope problems. Prepares and arranges for repairs with manufacturer and/or Hospital Clinical Engineering Department.
9.Performs clinical procedures such as specimen collection, EKG, application of post-mortem care, and maintenance of skin integrity
10.Prepares specimens by carefully labeling and entering proper information in log book.
11.Assists patient with activities of daily living, such as feeding, bathing and/or toileting. Orients patients to clinical environment. Assists patient with ambulation and all levels of mobilization
12.Applies heat and cold applications when necessary.
13.Maintains a safe, clean and functional environment, including ensuring for the comfortable movement of the patient. Assists the patient in room maintenance, such as bed-stripping and trash removed, when necessary.

15.Assist in transport of patients when needed
16.Maintains travel carts with appropriate supplies and assures equipment is in working order.
17.Maintains "isolation status" for patients under direction of an RN and according to set procedures.
18.Performs and documents critical alarm checks on medication and nutrition refrigerators, call bells, eyewash station.
19.Tests designated procedure rooms for negative pressure.
20.Performs daily inventory of stock and no stock supplies and places orders through appropriate systems per PAR levels. Removes outdated supplies
21.Obtains and assembles supplies
22.Maintains supply of nutrition
23.Generates reports as needed
24.Performs other related duties as required.
Professional Practice
1.Completes required competency for the G. I. Technical Specialist module after one year of initial employment and every three years thereafter
2.Completes ten hours of continuing education units per year related to endoscopy and
infection prevention and control.
3.Participates in staff development activities and staff meetings
4.Participates in exchange of patient report and nursing care conferences.
5.Participates in the Department of Nursing Quality Improvement Program/activities.
6.Demonstrates a humanistic, responsible, kind and caring attitude.
7.Adheres to dress code in accordance with departmental standards
8.Maintains attendance and punctuality record in accordance with departmental standards.
9.Assumes other responsibilities as assigned.
10.Demonstrates knowledge of hospital and departmental policies, procedures and guidelines and completes annual mandatory competencies.
11..Demonstrates knowledge of the Patients Bill of Rights.
Staff Shared Duties and Responsibilities Across Clinical Specialties
1.Greets visitors and answers telephones promptly and courteously
2.Escorts visitors to appropriate area, when necessary.
3.Provides information as appropriate.
Shared Duties and Responsibilities Units
1.Strips units/cubicles.
2.Performs discharge bed making.
3.Performs room turn-around in between cases by cleaning and disinfecting procedure carts, equipment, procedure beds, sink, and other surfaces.
- HS/GED required. College courses in sciences preferred
- In Healthcare setting preferred.
- Familiarity with standard concepts, practices of endoscopic clinical procedures preferred

- Certification: Certified Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor. Must be certified within six
