Summary
A Failure Analysis Engineer – Board/System Repair Specialist is a specialized professional focused on diagnosing and repairing Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCB) failures or SYSTEM failures. They are responsible for identifying root causes of board/system malfunctions, performing component-level or sub-system level repairs, and implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences. This role is crucial in industries such as electronics, telecommunications, and consumer electronics, where the reliability of PCBA or SYSTEM is vital.

Key Responsibilities:
Failure Analysis
- Conduct detailed investigations to determine the root cause of PCBA/SYSTEM failures using various analytical tools and techniques.
- Perform electrical, physical, chemical, and mechanical examinations of failed PCBAs/SYSTEM and components, or
- Analyze data from tests and experiments to identify failure modes and mechanisms.
Board Repair
- Perform detailed component-level diagnostics to identify faulty elements on PCBAs.
- Conduct soldering, desoldering, and micro-soldering repairs of components including resistors, capacitors, ICs, and connectors.
- Replace defective components to restore board functionality.
SYSTEM Repair
- Perform detailed diagnostics to identify faulty sub-system.
- Conduct dis-assembly and assembly process without inducing damage to the system.
- Replace defective sub-system to restore system functionality.
Testing and Evaluation
- Design and implement tests and experiments to replicate failure conditions.
- Utilize failure analysis tools such as X-RAY, Oscilloscope, Multimeter, Thermal Camera and etc. to analyze PCB materials and failures.
- Develop and maintain testing protocols and procedures specific to PCBAs/SYSTEM failure analysis
Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports with findings, pictures, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Document failure analysis results and maintain detailed repair and maintenance records.
- Present findings to cross-functional teams, management, and clients.
Collaboration and Communication
- Work closely with design, engineering, and manufacturing teams to provide feedback and support for improving PCBA designs and processes.
- Collaborate with suppliers and external laboratories for testing and analysis when necessary.
- Communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders to explain complex technical concepts.
Problem-Solving and Improvement
- Develop corrective and preventive actions to address identified root causes of PCBA or SYSTEM failures.
- Recommend design modifications, material changes, and process improvements based on analysis results.
- Follow up on implemented solutions to ensure effectiveness and prevent recurrence.
Tool and Equipment Management
- Maintain and calibrate failure analysis and board repair equipment.
- Stay updated on the latest analytical tools and methodologies specific to PCB repair.
Compliance and Standards
- Ensure that all analysis procedures and repair methods comply with industry standards and regulations.
- Keep abreast of new regulations and standards that could impact failure analysis and board repair processes.
Training and Development
- Mentor and train junior engineers and technicians in failure analysis and PCB repair techniques and methodologies.
- Participate in continuous professional development to stay current with industry trends and advancements.
