Engineer I, Tooling

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated and hands-on Tooling Engineer I, to join our Injection Molding Tooling team. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys solving problems, working collaboratively, learning new skills, and contributing to manufacturing excellence.

The Tooling Engineer I will support the Injection Molding Tooling and other Departments by assisting with injection molding tooling repairs, tooling improvements, process support, and continuous improvement initiatives. Working alongside experienced engineers and toolmakers, the successful candidate will develop valuable technical expertise while contributing to the production of critical, high-quality medical devices.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follow all safety procedures and actively promote a safe work environment.
  • Support the Tooling and Molding Departments in achieving daily production goals.
  • Assist in troubleshooting tooling issues and implementing effective solutions.
  • Support tooling repairs, maintenance activities, and design improvements.
  • Ensure tooling changes, repairs, and modifications are properly documented and processed through change control procedures.
  • Maintain tooling documentation, drawings, and spare parts records.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Maintenance, and Engineering teams to resolve issues and improve performance.
  • Assist with Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) activities and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support project timelines, milestones, and deliverables.

Professional Development & Growth

  • Participate in tooling improvement projects focused on quality, productivity, and cost reduction.
  • Learn and apply engineering principles related to injection molding, tooling design, and manufacturing processes.
  • Develop project management, troubleshooting, and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Gain experience with statistical analysis, process validation, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Assist in developing and improving tooling procedures and standard work instructions.
  • Build expertise in Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Statistical Process Control (SPC), Design of Experiments (DOE), and Lean/Six Sigma tools.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of engineering fundamentals.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Mechanical passion.

Preferred

  • Experience with SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Exposure to manufacturing, machining, tooling, or injection molding through coursework, internships, co-ops, or work experience.
  • Knowledge of statistics, SPC, DOE, Lean Manufacturing, or Six Sigma concepts.
  • Hands-on mechanical, machining, fabrication, or manufacturing experience.
  • Electrical circuits concepts.

Education and Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering required.
  • 0–2 years of engineering experience preferred.
  • Equivalent internship, co-op, laboratory, manufacturing, or machining experience is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Work is performed in a clean room and or a shop floor environment.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time; depending on the work they are performing.
  • Engineers are required to use computer or touch screen to enter work order data
  • Must be able to occasionally move and lift objects of up to 50 lbs
  • Typically requires travel less than 5% of the time
