Engineering Lead - Automation Platform (Remote, China)
BJAK is using AI, automation and backend systems to power end-to-end insurance operations. Our platform handles customer data flows, insurer integrations, document processing, policy issuance, endorsements and claims at scale.
We're looking for a talented Engineering Lead based in China to design, build and own the automation platform that powers BJAK’s core insurance workflows, turning complex operational processes into scalable, reliable and fully automated systems.
This is a fully remote position where you'll collaborate closely with our Malaysia-based engineering, product and operations teams to deliver high-impact production systems.
The Mission
Lead engineering efforts to build and scale BJAK’s core automation platform, transforming manual insurance operations into reliable, observable and fully automated workflows powered by backend systems and AI.
What You’ll Own
Lead design and delivery of core automation platform systems end-to-end.
Translate complex operational insurance processes into scalable system architecture and engineering execution.
Design backend workflows for multi-step processes including quotes, policy issuance, endorsements, claims and document handling.
Define and implement workflow orchestration logic, state management and automation rules.
Own key platform components such as workflow engines, integration layers and shared backend services.
Review architecture and code quality to ensure scalability, correctness and production reliability.
Mentor engineers and raise overall engineering standards across system design and execution.
Work closely with product, operations, QA and DevOps to deliver complete automation capabilities.
Improve system stability through monitoring, incident response, debugging and root cause analysis.
Ensure safe and reliable production releases with strong operational discipline.
What We're Looking For
Strong software engineering experience building production-grade backend or distributed systems.
Proven experience leading technical delivery of complex systems or platforms.
Ability to design scalable system architecture across workflows, services and domains.
Strong understanding of backend systems, APIs and distributed system principles.
Hands-on engineering mindset with willingness to contribute to code and implementation.
Strong judgment on architecture trade-offs, system complexity and delivery risks.
Experience working with cross-functional teams including product and operations.
Strong communication skills and ability to align technical and business stakeholders.
Calm under pressure when handling production incidents or delivery constraints.
High ownership mindset with strong follow-through from design to production.
Bonus Points
Experience building workflow automation systems, orchestration engines or platform infrastructure.
Experience with event-driven architectures, state machines or distributed systems design.
Experience with AI/ML-enabled automation or decisioning systems.
Knowledge of Node.js, Python, Java or similar backend technologies.
Experience with cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines and production monitoring systems.
Familiarity with observability tools (logging, metrics, tracing, alerting).
Experience scaling systems in high-growth or high-transaction environments.
Contributions to platform architecture or system-wide technical initiatives.
The Kind of Builder We Want
Thinks in terms of systems, workflows and long-term platform scalability.
Hands-on engineering leader who stays close to architecture and implementation.
Clear thinker who simplifies complex operational processes into robust systems.
Stable, structured and dependable under pressure.
Strong focus on reliability, observability and system correctness.
Actively identifies risks and drives root cause fixes, not just surface issues.
Builds platforms that enable other engineers and teams to move faster.
This Role Is Not For
People who only focus on feature delivery without system ownership.
Engineers who avoid production responsibility or debugging complexity.
Candidates who cannot clearly explain architecture trade-offs.
People who ignore operational impact or real-world system behavior.
Individuals who talk like engineering leaders but do not build systems.
Success in This Role
You'll be successful if you can:
Deliver a reliable and scalable automation platform powering core insurance workflows.
Improve system stability, observability and operational efficiency.
Reduce manual operations through robust workflow automation.
Raise engineering standards and system thinking across the team.
Build strong trust with engineering, product and operations through consistent delivery.
