Engineering Manager

About the Role

We are seeking an Engineering Manager at Chime’s San Francisco, CA office.

The base salary offered for this role will begin at $250,000 and up to $270,000. Full-time employees are also eligible for a bonus, competitive equity package, and benefits. The actual base salary offered may be higher, depending on your location, skills, qualifications, and experience.

In this role, you can expect to

  • Plan, direct, or coordinate activities in such fields as software engineering.
  • Direct daily operations of department, analyzing workflow, establishing priorities, developing standards and setting deadlines.
  • Meet with department heads, managers, supervisors, vendors, and others, to solicit cooperation and resolve problems.
  • Review project plans to plan and coordinate project activity.
  • Oversee the design, development, and deployment of platform solutions using AWS services (e.g., DynamoDB, Kinesis, EC2) and databases like Postgres, ensuring high-quality, scalable, and secure infrastructure solutions that align with business objectives.
  • Work closely with engineering and product leaders to identify use cases, define requirements, and drive technical decisions that support quality, performance, scalability, reliability, and security for the platform.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, encourage creative problem-solving, and drive continuous improvement by fostering a collaborative environment for your team to thrive in while taking smart risks.
  • Mentor engineers at all levels, providing guidance on career development and technical skills, while empowering the team to solve complex infrastructure challenges and fostering a growth-oriented environment.
  • Establish clear team objectives and align them with broader business goals, ensuring effective execution of initiatives.
  • Regularly evaluate progress and adjust priorities to meet evolving needs.
  • Ensure that the platform infrastructure is designed and maintained to meet high standards for reliability, availability, and performance, with proactive monitoring and rapid incident response processes.
  • Act as a key contributor to overall engineering initiatives, collaborating with other leaders across the company to enhance platform capabilities and continuously evolve the technical strategy in alignment with company goals.
  • Must be available to work on projects at various, unanticipated sites throughout the United States. Telecommuting is permitted.

To thrive in this role, you must have

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field and 5 years of experience in the job offered or in a software engineering manager/director-related occupation.
  • Position requires at least 5 years of experience in each of the following skills:
    • Utilize experience with leading and mentoring a team of software engineers by offering constructive feedback, resolving challenges, and fostering continuous professional growth to enhance team performance and drive technical excellence;
    • Utilize experience with cross-functional collaboration with engineering, product, security, and compliance teams while translating complex infrastructure topics into clear insights for executives, enabling strategic alignment and impactful decision-making.
  • Position requires at least 2 years of experience in each of the following skills:
    • Utilize knowledge of AWS services such as Dynamodb and Kinesis to architect, build, and deploy scalable, high-performance platform solutions that drive business-critical outcomes;
    • Utilize advanced knowledge of Event-driven software architecture principles to design and implement low-latency, secure data streaming pipelines that support real-time data processing at scale;
    • Utilize knowledge of tools including Terraform, CircleCI, ArgoCD, AWS CloudFormation, Docker and Kubernetes to enhance the reliability, scalability, and resiliency of platform infrastructure;
    • Utilize knowledge of tools like Datadog, GitHub Actions, PagerDuty and AWS CloudWatch to drive observability, reliability, and incident management;
    • Utilize experience with forging strategic relationships with third-party vendors, aligning support capabilities with large-scale platform needs and business objectives;
    • Utilize experience with a customer-centric culture, spearheading innovation and initiatives to enhance overall engineering productivity and drive continuous platform optimizations.
