CBC News is looking for a creative, decisive and empathetic journalist to lead the weekend network news and live programming teams as Executive Producer.
You’re a leader who is motivated by serving audiences with breaking news and the latest developments on major stories. You are fearless amid ambiguity, remaining calm and responding quickly as stories unfold and programming teams lean on you for guidance. You help deploy teams to gather, verify and present accurate information to audiences across platforms, across the weekend.
This work is inherently dynamic, with tight deadlines and the constant evolution of stories. In this role, you’re in the Toronto newsroom with weekend programming teams, driving live and daily news coverage, co-ordination and distribution across CBC News Network, digital, streaming, social, CBC Radio newscasts and podcasts, and national call-in programs.
You are focused on meeting audience needs and have a deep understanding of what drives the audience to watch, listen and read across dayparts. You rely on data and research to inform your decisions. You bring a deep understanding and appreciation of live production across platforms, modular and visual storytelling, and digital presentation. Your curiosity encourages experimentation, and leads to transformative change within a newsroom.

As required during weekends, you support special programming, breaking news, live events and planned specials. You manage the development and scheduling of staff. You guide and support on-air talent. You provide regular feedback to hosts, producers, reporters, writers and technical staff. You care for the physical and mental wellbeing of your team and co-ordinate support with the Managing Editor as required.
You exhibit stellar communication and collaboration skills, essential for working across diverse teams and regions to deliver relevant stories and compelling formats.
Reporting to the Managing Editor, Live and Daily News, Weekends,
Key Tasks:
Drive editorial considerations to determine story priorities, develop innovative content strategies and guide teams through live, breaking and ongoing news stories.
Respond and co-ordinate coverage of major events/breaking news, often in partnership with CBC colleagues or freelancers at the local, national and international level and in a live environment.
Oversee assignment of writing, researching, gathering, editing, vetting and distribution of content against CBC News editorial strategy.
Provide strong direction through the day to show teams on expectations around story coverage including length, deadlines, updates, treatments and value-added material, ensuring close collaboration between news units.
Monitor content across CBC News platforms to ensure breadth of coverage, variety of treatments and quality of work throughout the day.
Plan, select and request the financial and production/resource requirements needed for daily news coverage. During program preparation, production and post-production, is responsible and accountable for exercising budget authority.
Ensure teams are meeting audience needs and that they have the tools to support this work.
Ensure compliance with the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, including editorial sign-off on sensitive or complex stories.
Co-ordinate, problem-solve and execute strategy with the team.
Interpret data and competitive analysis to develop editorial strategies to build trust in the CBC News brand and to retain and grow the audience for CBC News.
Answer Ombuds complaints and manage external and internal editorial issues in collaboration with the Managing Editor.
In partnership with the Managing Editor, responsible for staffing and hiring decisions; staff development; training; performance management; feedback; schedules and outreach.
What you bring to the role:
As proven in your attached application:
Experience in leading in a deadline driven environment
Experience in live news programming and content, with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production
Exceptional critical thinking, including problem solving, crisis management and editorial judgment
Thoughtfulness around serving audiences
Demonstrated professional experience with various news platforms including streaming, digital, social, radio and television
Superior coaching and mentoring skills with both developing journalists and those who are veterans in the field.
Highly skilled in audio, video, digital and social content production and planning, or demonstrate a high aptitude to learn and master these platforms.
Ability to forge positive team relationships where you value collaboration, transparency, respect and inclusiveness.
Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
Ability to work across departments to chart future workflows, help assess production tools that will help to build our capability to be live when the audience needs us, and on-demand when they want us
Experience leading iterative projects and programming that require adaptation and innovation
Minimum 7 years of previous related leadership experience in a multiplatform newsroom or an environment with transferable skills
A university degree or college diploma in journalism, video production or related fields is preferred
