Exploration Geological Technician - Fixed Term

Reporting to the Drilling Services Supervisor, you’ll be responsible for managing drill sites and drill sampling for Exploration group needs. You’ll work with the Drilling Contractor and Geology team to ensure safe and efficient drilling operations and support functions are accomplished.

Schedule is 7 on and 7 off 12-hour shifts supporting drilling operations and sampling needs. The principal objective of this role is the ensure all drill sites and drill samples are held to the highest standard and to operate variety of equipment in accordance with OGC and Government procedures and policies to support the Exploration Group

Salary is based on experience and knowledge of the trade. Increase in compensation is based on self-motivation and performance through a yearly evaluations and industry standards.

  • Practice and lead good housekeeping and safe work

  • Conform to Safety and Environmental policies

  • Follow and lead procedures and SOP’s

  • Conduct and lead daily equipment inspections reporting defects

  • Be a visible safety leader and drive efficiency

  • Conduct geotechnical logging for rock properties and weigh samples for density

  • Photograph core, download and label photos

  • Complete QAQC of core sample measurements and orientation lines

  • Cut core using rotary saws

  • Sample core and place in sample bags after cutting

  • Ensure that cut core sample IDs match the master sheets provided

  • Insert blanks and standards into sample batches for QAQC

  • Place samples in large plastic blue barrels for offsite shipment to assay lab

  • Operate mobile equipment including forklifts, pickup trucks, skid steer and dozer

  • Be able to competently reverse an 18-foot trailer

  • Operate core cutting electric saw, hand tools, hammer, shovels, broom, scrapers, etc.

  • Perform pre-operational inspections and examinations of equipment and work areas

  • Retrieve drill samples from the field and deliver to core shed

  • Lift up to 50-pound samples using proper lifting techniques.

  • Ability to communicate with geologists and contractors

  • Assist with down-hole surveys and drill rig alignment

  • Place silt fencing in the field adjacent to drill sites

  • Rehabilitate drill sumps using dozers, bobcat, and hand tools

  • Deliver cut core for final storage using trailer hitched to pick-up truck

  • Organize and inventory pulps

  • Provide daily site and shift reports

  • Operate Ford 250 and Dodge 5500 pickup truck

  • Operate support equipment for department needs

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives

  • Complete core sampling (Core cutting, shipping, pulp organizations, quality control checks, etc)

  • Perform other duties as needed for the Exploration Group

  • Current equipment includes but not limited to F150’s, F250’s, Dodge 5500 gas, Dodge 5500 diesel, Propane forklift, Case diesel forklift, Bobcat skid steer, CAT D5K dozer, Freightliner/Ford/Sterling commercial trucks (Dump and water trucks), and equipment trailers.

Education:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.

  • Basic Math, English, and computer skills

Experience:

  • Previous related experience shall be considered.

Language Skills:

  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required

Other Skills:

  • Work around power tools

  • Drive mobile equipment

  • Knowledge of basic erosion control

  • Knowledge of equipment operations

  • Teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Knowledge of mechanics and maintenance

  • Current Driver license (Commercial Driver License is a benefit)

Physical Demands

  • Ability to work safely independently or as a team.

  • Able to hear sufficiently to distinguish various pitches of warning alarms.

  • Wear personal protective equipment designated for the work area and task, including safety-toe shoes, safety glasses, respirator, rain gear, hearing protection, appropriate gloves, hard hat, and any other equipment required for safe performance of duties.

  • Lift up to 50 pounds when required.

  • Repetitively lift up to 35 pounds for a period of up to 12 hours per day, using the safest lifting techniques for various tasks.

  • Stand at one station for up to 12 hours per day.

  • Manoeuvre fingers, hands, wrists and arms continuously up to 10 hours per day.

  • Work in an outdoor environment.

  • Walk and stand on uneven and wet surfaces for extended periods of time (entire shift).
