Fabricator - QTMP

A Fabrication Role at the Cutting Edge of Industry 4.0

As a Fabricator on the QTMP project, you will work within a modern, highly engineered manufacturing environment that sets new benchmarks for rail production in Australia. This is not a traditional fabrication role; it offers exposure to advanced automation, robotic welding, and digitally enabled manufacturing systems.

The role involves working with an integrated production system that includes:

  • Robotic resistance welding technology — the first system of its kind deployed in Australia for rail manufacturing
  • Robotic GMAW welding systems to deliver high levels of consistency and weld quality
  • Fronius TPSi and iWave welding equipment, providing precision control, process stability, and data capability
  • Automated material handling and delivery systems supporting safe, efficient production flows
  • Fixed and portable fume extraction systems designed into workstations to support best‑practice safety outcomes
  • Industry‑leading jigging and fixturing solutions developed for mass production while maintaining dimensional accuracy

Working alongside engineers, automation specialists, and production leadership, you will contribute to a structured, data‑driven manufacturing environment where quality is built into every stage of the process.

Why This Opportunity Is Different

This role offers Fabricators the opportunity to:

  • Gain hands‑on experience with advanced automation and robotic welding systems
  • Develop capability in digitally controlled and high‑precision welding processes
  • Work within a greenfield, purpose‑built facility designed for high‑rate, high‑quality rail manufacturing
  • Contribute to one of Australia’s most significant rail infrastructure programs
  • Be part of an operation scaling rapidly through 2026 and beyond

Join the Future of Rail Manufacturing in Queensland

Downer Rail & Transit Systems is entering a new phase of advanced manufacturing and is seeking skilled Fabricators to support the delivery of one of Australia’s most significant rail manufacturing projects. With more than 155 years of rail heritage, Downer is Australia’s leading rail business, delivering whole‑of‑life asset management and next‑generation transport solutions. Through QTMP, we are redefining how rollingstock is designed, manufactured, and delivered in Australia.

The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program involves the design and delivery of 65 new six-car passenger trains at a purpose-built manufacturing facility at Torbanlea, near Maryborough. Trains will be maintained and stabled at a rail facility being constructed in Ormeau, on the Gold Coast. The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program will support South East Queensland's population and economic growth, as well as Cross River Rail and the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

If you take pride in precision, value innovation, and want to work in an environment that reflects the future of manufacturing rather than the past, this role offers a unique opportunity to be part of an industry‑defining project.
