Field Service Engineer (L1)

Job Opportunity

  • Entry-level Field Service Engineer role with Smiths Detection, involving travel to high-security customer environments to support maintenance and repair of X-ray and trace detection equipment.
  • Opportunity to work in a dynamic field-based role requiring strong teamwork, autonomy, and customer interaction.

What you will be doing

  • Travel to metropolitan, regional, and remote customer sites, including interstate travel requiring flights and overnight stays
  • Perform troubleshooting, servicing, repair, and preventative maintenance of X-ray and detection equipment
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical (≤24V), and electronic faults using tools such as multimeters and system software
  • Replace and repair mechanical components (belts, rollers, motors) and handle heavy equipment using lifting aids
  • Install and commission new equipment alongside internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Conduct inspections, cleaning, de-greasing, and internal equipment servicing
  • Manage reactive maintenance and respond to service requests within agreed KPIs
  • Complete service documentation, reports, and maintain accurate system records for parts usage
  • Support warehouse processes and update inventory tracking systems
  • Participate in team meetings, safety briefings, and ongoing training
  • Provide customer support both on-site and remotely, including being part of an on-call roster
  • Maintain tools, equipment calibration, and a clean work environment

What you’ll bring:

  • Certificate III Trade Qualification or Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, or IT disciplines
  • 0–2 years of relevant technical or field service experience
  • Valid provisional or full driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain required security clearances and industry licenses
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive and team-oriented mindset
  • Ability to work independently, travel frequently, and support after-hours operations

Nice to have:

  • Prior experience in field service, maintenance, or repair environments
  • Exposure to diagnostic tools, testing equipment, or industrial systems
  • Experience working in high-security or compliance-driven environments
  • Familiarity with safety standards and structured maintenance processe
