Financial Risks Reinsurance Underwriter

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced reinsurance professional to lead the underwriting and management of a sophisticated financial risks treaty portfolio. In this strategic role, you will evaluate complex reinsurance opportunities, negotiate treaty structures, and drive profitable portfolio growth while partnering with brokers, cedents, and internal specialists. You will play a key role in shaping underwriting strategy, monitoring portfolio performance, and supporting long-term business objectives. Operating in a fully remote environment, you'll collaborate with cross-functional experts while representing the organization across the global reinsurance market. This position is ideal for a technically strong underwriter with deep expertise in financial risks and a passion for building lasting industry relationships.
Accountabilities:
- Lead the end-to-end underwriting of assumed treaty reinsurance submissions across financial risks, including exposure analysis, pricing, treaty structuring, and underwriting recommendations.
- Serve as the primary relationship manager for assigned brokers and cedents, identifying new business opportunities, leading negotiations, and maintaining strong external partnerships.
- Evaluate portfolio performance, monitor profitability, accumulations, diversification, and risk exposure to ensure alignment with underwriting strategy and capital objectives.
- Structure, review, and negotiate treaty contracts, including coverage terms, exclusions, endorsements, and contractual wording in collaboration with legal, actuarial, and operational teams.
- Prepare underwriting analyses and present recommendations to underwriting committees, supporting sound decision-making and governance.
- Contribute to annual business planning, portfolio strategy, production targets, and the ongoing refinement of underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
- Collaborate closely with actuarial, finance, claims, risk management, and accounting teams to support pricing accuracy, treaty administration, and financial reporting.
- Represent the organization at broker meetings, client visits, industry conferences, and market events while monitoring regulatory, competitive, and macroeconomic developments affecting financial risks.
- Mentor junior underwriters and analysts by sharing technical expertise and supporting the development of underwriting capabilities across the team.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related discipline; an MBA or advanced degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of insurance or reinsurance experience, including at least 5 years focused on treaty or portfolio-level reinsurance underwriting within financial risks or related specialty lines.
- Demonstrated expertise in at least two of the following areas: mortgage, surety, or credit reinsurance.
- Strong understanding of treaty reinsurance structures, pricing methodologies, underwriting practices, and portfolio management principles.
- Proven experience managing treaty portfolios, evaluating performance, driving profitable growth, and making sound independent underwriting decisions.
- Ability to analyze cedent financial statements, exposure data, actuarial models, and historical loss experience to assess complex risks.
- Excellent negotiation, relationship management, and communication skills with experience working directly with brokers, cedents, and senior stakeholders.
- Strong presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex underwriting analyses to executive leadership and external partners.
- High level of autonomy, integrity, and accountability with the ability to succeed in a remote work environment.
- Proficiency with underwriting systems, pricing models, Excel, and portfolio management tools.
- Professional designations such as ARe or CPCU are considered an advantage.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for client meetings, conferences, and business events as needed.
- Competitive annual base salary of $120,000–$150,000, based on experience, qualifications, and market factors.
