First Mate / Outdoor Co-Teacher

Job Purpose (Overview)

The First Mate supports the safe and effective sailing of the school’s ship, The Black Dolphin, during educational activities; and helps maintain the ship for use by the school. The First Mate may also be asked to help, as needed, in the development and provision of educational activities.



Key Duties and Responsibilities

Sailing Duties

Assist in safe navigation and operation of the vessel

Develop knowledge of educational points of interest in the local marine environment

Help passengers arrange harbor transit for planned voyages

Maintenance Duties

Repair, refit, and service of the vessel’s various systems

Helping coordination between owner, captain, and suppliers and expert service providers

Educational Support

Assist teachers with educational activities and classroom management

Ensure knowledge of and adherence to health and safety requirements aboard

Assist Ship Captain and teachers in developing curriculum focused on sailing, marine science, and maritime heritage



Required Qualifications

A certificate of Pleasure Vessel Operators Certificate of Competency Grade II is preferred

Attended relevant Basic Safety Training

Knowledge of and hands on experience in working vessels

Ability to work as a team member

Good Command of English and/ or Cantonese
